A Ribbon For Any Source

The AEA KU5A breaks new ground in ribbon microphone technology with its supercardioid polar pattern that rejects off-axis sound from room reflections, other instruments, and loud stage ambience in live situations. At close range, the KU5A captures extended highs while retaining the smooth sonic character one expects from an AEA ribbon mic. Singers can get right up on the grille without damaging the ribbon element, because the KU5A's interior components are the most well-protected of any mic in the AEA lineup. The KU5A's active electronics make for a perfect match with any preamp. With its robust build quality, the AEA KU5A is a great choice for everyday use in the studio and on the road.

Captures what it's aimed at

Five years of intensive R&D resulted in a remarkable breakthrough: a ribbon mic you can use on any source. Traditional side-address ribbon mics have a native figure-8 pickup pattern with excellent side rejection, but equal sensitivity front and back. With its supercardioid polar pattern, the front-address AEA KU5A captures only what it's aimed at, rejecting off-axis leakage that can muddy up your signal. Whether capturing a vocal, electric guitar, or a snare drum, the KU5A delivers where conventional ribbon mics simply cannot.

Use it with any preamp

Passive ribbon mics have low output and require a high-gain preamp — which may not always be available. The KU5A has active electronics, so you can use it with any preamp. With the KU5A, you can choose a preamp for its sonic qualities alone. Traditional ribbon mics were notoriously delicate. Thanks to its rugged design and construction, you can use the AEA KU5A close-up on loud sources (a switchable highpass filter is provided to reduce proximity effect), onstage, or outdoors without fear of damaging the internal components or the attractive casing.

AEA evolves the ribbon mic

A new player entered the ribbon microphone manufacturing game in 1998 — AEA. Established by engineers and technicians that had been repairing classic RCA ribbon mics since before 1976, AEA set out to not just pay homage to, but to faithfully reproduce the sound and performance of the original RCA 44 ribbon microphone. And to the acclaim of former RCA engineers, they accomplished just that — in a robust modern mic you can rely on session after session. AEA designs impart classic sonic qualities and response to your tracks that you can only get from a ribbon transducer. Many engineers at Sweetwater have used delicate vintage ribbon microphones, and we appreciate AEA mics for their durability and versatility as much as for their superior sound.

Fantastic!

I'm using it for vocals and guitars and it's awesome. The HPF switch really adds to the amount of sounds you can pull from the instrument and its construction is lovely. Highly recommended and thanks!

Voice-Over and Audio Book Wonder!

My years in radio and voice over has caused me to favor ribbon mics.
In the past I'veloved the RCA BX44, however THIS KU5A and it's hypercardiod pickup in my little VO booth coupled with a low room tone of -65dB average ROCKS.
The warmth of my voice comes through and as a voice actor I can work the in and out, close and far away, loud and upclose quiet delivery of any animated script and get what I want without the sibilance and dirty sounding fffffs I get when using a condenser. I love my Neumann, but this is my favorite!

I love the sound of this mic!

This mic has a warmth about it's sound, but it still very pure. I am very happy with the sound of this mic on my voice, as well as on a Fender Champ, and a snare drum - all perfect! The construction is very hearty, and the mic seems very well made. Overall, I am really enjoying this mic, and hope it will serve me for many decades to come.

Beautiful Sounding Mic!

I can't say I have a massive amount of experience with recording, but compared to any other mic I've used (all in the $100-$400 range), this mic sounds, by far, the best. This mic has a warmness about it which I love, but also offers incredible clarity. I have also loved that way it sounds with guitars and drums. Also the mic itself seems exceptionally well made. The mic cancels peripheral sounds very effectively. Also, the high pass filter makes the sound of vocals even smoother. Overall, excellent quality sound.

Using For R&B Vocals

This mic is versatile for vocals in the sense that it takes EQ well if you want it to "compete" against the famed mics in a modern pop recording, for example. Or just leave it flat for a darker old school vibe. Yes, it's brighter than 441 but not as bright as a C12, 800G, or 251, for example, but has more "weight" and heftiness than all of the above. In addition, it rejects room tone very well and has an up-front, in-your-face sound due to both its pattern and a rise in the 4k region. Great for standing out in a dense mix. The only thing it lacks is the air above 10k the above condensers have but that isn't necessarily needed for vocals.
