Biography: Charles reigned as King of France from 1824 to 1830, during which he sought to reassert the place of royalty in French political culture.
He was unpopular throughout his rule, with conflict between his reactionary policies—increasing the power of the Catholic church, reimbursing nobility, etc.—and the liberal attitudes that had taken hold.
It was Charles that set France to conquer Algeria, apparently in order to distract the populace from domestic problems; a common strategy at the time, where internal energies were diverted to external issues.
Yet none of these efforts were sufficient, with Charles' reign ending with urban riots and ultimately the July Revolution, at which he was forced to abdicate.
