SHOEBOX IS A GIFT East Carleton-based Agency Express are delighted to announce the launch of their 2019 Christmas Shoebox Appeal in association with international relief charity Teams4U. Each year Teams4U run a nationwide shoebox appeal to provide Christmas gifts for children and families living in poverty across Romania, Bosnia and Belarus. Agency Express has joined forces with the charity, turning their head office into a collection point for shoebox donations across Norfolk. Agency Express Managing Director Stephen Watson said: “Our goal is to help increase the number of children Teams4U can reach this
Christmas. So we are reaching out to communities across the county asking for support and donations to this year’s appeal.” Getting involved is easy! The Diss Business Forum (DBF) is appealing to its members to raise funds for an additional defibrillator in Diss, as part of their continued support for nominated charity Diss First Responders. DBF members want to buy and install a new machine available for public use 24 hours a day, as well as raise awareness of how crucial defibrillators are in the event of a cardiac arrest. Rachel Hillier from Diss First Responders said: “With our area being over 25 miles from any hospital, and our ambulance service having to cover major distances on mostly single carriageway roads, having defibrillators easily accessible to the public is of vital importance in a medical emergency where the first few minutes are crucial in maintaining life.” More information about the appeal and specific fundraising events is available at www.dbf.org.uk.
Following their summer exhibition of abstract expressionism, Diss Corn Hall are presenting an exhibition of Bridget Riley’s screenprints, featuring the images that made her name. Riley’s name is synonymous with the Swinging Sixties, yet it was a chance encounter with gallery owner Victor Musgrave, who championed ‘outsider art’ and who gave Riley her first exhibition at Gallery One in London in 1 , that propelled her to fame. Riley’s work was immediately identified with the Op Art movement; abstract art that uses optical illusions. The unsettling visual impact of her work led to her becoming an international star in a few short years. Show curator David Case says: “Riley only made a few black and white screenprints which were early in her career and we are privileged in being able to show a selection of these, including her most famous image ‘Movement in Squares’, alongside her colour prints from later decades.” Masters at The Corn Hall: Bridget Riley Screenprints 1 – 01 ’ runs from 1 November, Monday to Saturday 10am - 4pm. On Saturday November, at 1 pm, David Case will give an introduction to Bridget Riley’s early work.

fter a year of ups and downs — but mostly ups — we at Waveney Heritage have recently celebrated our first birthday And what a year it’s been!
We are a CIC (Community Interest Company) which is a new form of company designed for social enterprises that want to use their profits and assets for public good Our aim is to develop and run activities relating to the catchment of the River Waveney which benefit the community The organisation is run entirely by volunteers and I work alongside fellow directors Robin Twigge and Margaret Gri ths The Waveney Heritage Centre is in the old primary school building on Grove Road, in Brockdish; a spacious, airy building with a long history It was set up as a school, even before the Education Act of the late 1800s, by the wealthy rector George France and a number of the ‘great and the good’ in the village The building was previously the poor house, so it already had a long history of benefiting the community When the school closed three years ago, the owners Norwich Diocese were eager to see this tradition continued, as were all of us in Brockdish A lease was finally agreed and Waveney Heritage took over Over the past year we have held two ma or exhibitions, had twice monthly talks on a wide range of topics, visited Norfolk and Su olk archive centres to research the past of the many ancient listed buildings in Brockdish and the ad acent village of Needham, investigated the family histories of local families,

Theatre Royal Norwich — 19-23 November he story of a top recording artist from her origins in Cuba to international singing stardom is taking centre stage this winter at Norwich Theatre Royal.

“You will enjoy songs you recognise, some I have written new lyrics for, and some ad-libs so we don’t lose the audience for the story. We also want to bring the Latin fire to this country in the music
On Your Feet follows the true-life story of Gloria Estefan and her husband Emilio, from their humble beginnings through to the streets of Miami and beyond, accompanied by some of her biggest hits including Rhythm Is Gonna Get You, Conga, Don’t Want To Lose You Now, Dr Beat and 1-2-3. The show comes to the region fresh from a summer run at the London Coliseum.
The show itself touches on a host of themes, with love at the core of it all. Gloria explained: “It is the love story of my husband and I. There is the love story to music and to our country. The dancing is like nothing you have seen here yet. It is Olympic dancing as far as I am concerned. I don’t know how they do it. There are some moves there that are death defying It is a mood thing
If you are expecting it to be a straightforward jukebox musical which just celebrates Gloria’s music, you would be wrong. It also aims to capture the reality of her life and explore what she has gone through personally and professionally.
The one thing Gloria is guaranteeing is that the show will take you through a rollercoaster of feelings. She said: “If you watch it, you will go through some emotions. My favourite thing to do is to make people cry. I would sit at the back of the theatre in Broadway so as not to disrupt the show and I would love looking around and see big beefy men with tears falling down their cheeks. The show is also a father-daughter story, because there are so many connections to humans and the things that we live through I hope everyone en oys it
Gloria and her husband Emilio had wanted to create a musical for around 15 years and it never happened for a number of reasons. A request to work on a Broadway musical harnessing Cuban music reignited their creative thirst and within three years the show was up and running in New York’s theatre-land. Gloria said the songs flow naturally with the narrative. She explained: “It is funny, because audiences think they were especially written for On Your Feet. Of course you are going to hear a lot of our hits, but you will also hear songs you won’t recognise, which seem like they are made for the show.

SPICED MARMALADE CAKE This is a quick, simple cake and it keeps for days. Gluten free, and with cardamom flavouring that complements the marmalade beautifully, it’s perfect for afternoon tea, or as a tempting lunchbox treat.
Serves 8 480kcal/54g carbs per serving INGREDIENTS

200g unsalted butter, softened 150g caster sugar 50g light muscovado sugar Zest of 4 clementines or 2 oranges 4 tablespoons of chunky marmalade 2 large eggs 80g ground almonds 150g polenta ½ teaspoon ground cardamom 1 level teaspoon baking powder, sifted ½ teaspoon orange blossom water 50ml milk
ICING 200g icing sugar About 30ml clementine (or orange) juice Orange blossom water Orange zest, edible petals, etc, to decorate
METHOD 1. Grease and line a 20cm round deep cake tin. Preheat the oven to 180°C. In a large bowl beat together the butter and sugars until they are light and flu y Add the orange zest and marmalade and beat through. Then add the eggs, one at a time, beating each in well.

2. In a separate bowl mix together the almonds, polenta, cardamom, baking powder and salt. Add these ingredients to the wet mix, and fold through gently. Add the orange blossom water and milk and mix gently — your batter should ust drop o the spatula Spoon into the prepared tin and level o 3. Bake in the oven for about 40 minutes, until it’s golden, springy to touch and a skewer comes out clean. Rest for 15 minutes in the tin, then remove to a rack to cool. 4. To make the icing, sift the sugar into a bowl, then stir in about 30ml of clementine juice to make a thick icing that you can spread smoothly on the cake without it running o Add a drop or two of orange blossom water and stir through. 5. Spread on the cake, then immediately scatter your preferred decorations over it (if any). The cake will keep for about 5 days in a tin. The Pennoyer Centre’s staff and volunteer BakeForce make delicious cakes for the café, which won the EDP Norfolk Food & Drink “Best Baking” Award. Green light for a green promenade in Diss
he Parish Fields Friends group, in Diss, has received the go-ahead to work on a project to enhance part of a historic walkway around The Lawn, otherwise known as Parish Fields.
The Lawn is an area of old parkland in the centre of Diss, landscaped in late Georgian times and defined by a boundary belt of trees. Some of that boundary belt still exists on land in public ownership, but in a neglected state. It includes yew, oak, beech, and lime trees and nearby there is also a scrap of old meadow land rich in plant species. In conjunction with landowners, Diss Town Council and South Norfolk Council and subject to confirmation by The Lawn’s landowner, the proposal is to restore part of the belt by: sympathetically managing old trees; planting new trees such as box, yew, lime, and holly; reinstating a pathway; enhancing an old ghost’ pond site providing interpretation boards and creating a wildflower walk on a surviving part of the old Parish Fields.
A spokesperson from Parish Fields Friends says: We’re delighted to get the provisional green light to restore a part of this historical green promenade’ for the people of Diss and its visitors. The District Council and the Town Council have been very active in their support for our proposal and we would like to o er our thanks for their cooperation and assistance in bringing this proposal to life. “The initial intention is to have some restorative planting done this winter, when trees are fully dormant There’s lots of interesting work to be done and if anyone would like to get involved we will be looking for volunteers eager to roll up their sleeves, as well as o ers of material such as hardcore for the path or damp-loving plants. WHAT’S IN Season?
Keep an eye on what’s in season and you’ll get the most out of all the fresh local produce that Norfolk and Suffolk have to offer. Juliette from Fredrick’s Fine Foods in Diss shares her favourites for October and November.
Beetroot – don’t neglect the lovely and colourful beetroot, try using it in a hummus to make a really delicious dip, or make some moist beetroot and chocolate brownies.
Cobnuts, walnuts and chestnuts – make the most of our home grown nuts, cobnuts are like hazelnuts and well worth seeking out. Walnuts need no introduction and are so much sweeter when fresh. Chestnuts are great in both sweet and savoury dishes.
Kale – all varieties of kale are packed with healthy stu se them in a pesto to en oy with pasta, or make some kale, pea and ricotta fritters And what about making a crispy filo pie with kale, ricotta and lemon zest?
Quince – this beautiful and fragrant fruit is lovely ust piled in a bowl as a dramatic centrepiece, but don’t forget to eat them! Superb cooked in a crumble with apples, or wonderful roasted with pork or wild boar.
VEGETABLES
Swede – not the most glamorous vegetable, but a great alternative to potato for topping cottage pie or fish pie Also delicious in soups and with your Sunday roast. Celeriac – try celeriac mash or chips, add to leeks to make a creamy and filling soup, or en oy its subtle flavour in a celeriac risotto
FRUIT Apples – liven up your coleslaw by grating in some apple, or make some delicious strudel with filo pastry Damsons – the best am ever, but also lovely also pair well made into a crumble. Damsons D with savoury dishes such as the ats. stronger game meats
FISH Clams – what could be nicer than a creamy fish chowder and some homemade soda bread…go on, have a go? Scallops – such a treat, why not recreate the classic Coquille St Jacques; the combination of scallop, creamy sauce and potato gratin really is yummy?!

ermented foods are constantly promoted for their health benefits, particularly when it comes to improving digestion, gut function and the balance of good bugs living in our gut It’s become a hot topic But now there is emerging research that gut bacteria can also have a very positive impact on other aspects of our wellbeing so we all want to get our hands on something that can help our gut bacteria What are fermented foods? These are foods and drinks that have undergone the process of fermentation, which promotes the growth and life cycle of bacteria During this process, carbohydrate is converted to organic acids using microorganisms like yeast or bacteria, imparting a flavour or aroma to the food Some of the most common types of fermented foods are: • Sauerkraut Finely cut cabbage fermented by lactic acid bacteria • Kimchi — Salted and fermented vegetables like cabbage, carrots and radish •
r Fermented dairy product, also a good source of calcium and protein Due to the fermentation process it’s also low in lactose
• Kombucha — Fermented drink made from sweetened tea and a symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast Bacteria and yeast convert sugar into small amounts of alcohol and acetic acid • Miso — Traditional Japanese fermented paste made from barley, rice or soybeans It gives a nice umami flavour to soups or stir fries
• Tempeh Naturally fermented soybeans, with a texture like tofu and a nutty flavour This is a good source of complete protein for vegetarians • Yoghurt Fermented milk product which is packed with several vitamins and minerals like calcium and vitamin B Also a good source of live culture of bacteria like lactic acid bacteria Are fermented foods su cient for gut acteria Trillions of microbes populate our large intestine, and although incorporating fermented products into our diet is an easy and convenient way to look after our gut bacteria, unfortunately this is not the only answer So, what else can you do to help your gut bacteria? hilst visiting one of our local commercial nurseries recently I asked the owner which was her favourite plant, “these are great,” she responded, then “I really like those,” and “there’s a batch on the end that look really lovely…” In hindsight, it was a bit of a cruel question to put to someone who loves her plants and takes pride in producing them, she’s surrounded by hundreds of di erent plants every day and she makes her living by selling them. But I don’t care, so I’ll ask you the same question (through the power of print), if you stood in your garden, which is your favourite plant? Would it be an exotic palm, or a dwarf scented pink, maybe a big blousy clematis, or a tiny alpine, could it be your tasty tomatoes, or an impressive pumpkin? Do you get delight from the smiling faces of pansies in your hanging basket, or pure joy from a stylish houseplant? Most plants have a wow-factor moment, and as that fades their influence as our favourite also diminishes, to be overshadowed by the next eye-catching stunner. It’s plants that make a garden, and this question shows that you need a mixed variety to create ongoing interest which will keep your garden looking good
throughout the year It’ll encourage you to go outside to admire and carry out a bit of maintenance, as little and often makes tasks less daunting. Favourite plants come in all shapes and sizes, and some of the best are not chosen by you but by others as gifts to mark an occasion, or as cuttings from their own garden Lots of plants are special because of the memories they evoke, such as places you’ve been, holidays you’ve enjoyed, times in the past from your childhood, or thoughts of people who are no longer around. Getting outside into the garden is addictive and it brings the opportunity to step back from life’s everyday hassles into your own tranquil space, after all it’s hard to be stressed or angry for long when you’re surrounded by the scents, sounds and colours that nature brings So make the opportunity to create a better space to relax in and enjoy, and soon you may not be looking at just your favourite plant but one of your favourite places.

Bulb planting is a go ood example, and now is the time to think about how to light up the garden when it wakes after hibernation. COSY CONTAINERS Container plants are particularly vulnerable as the weather cools down. They can become waterlogged and this can lead to the compost freezing and the plant rotting or dying. Raise containers o the ground, using bricks or pot feet, as this helps drainage and means the container is not sitting in water. Remember to remove saucers, too. Bubble Wrap is great for pot insulation, because it stops the compost from freezing and reduces
the likelihood of the pot cracking. Apply an organic mulch around the base to retain heat and prevent root damage through freezing. To protect the top half of your plants from frost and strong winds, wrap them in a frost fleece and carefully secure with garden twine or string. You could also use old bed sheets or tablecloths. Cover plants before dusk and remove the fleece in the morning, or leave it in place if the weather is particularly bad.

BLACKBERRY LEMON CREAMS From Juliette at Fredrick’s Fine Foods, in Diss This is a really simple recipe to make using any fruit — or even without the fruit! The ‘custard’ does not require cooking in an oven, but could easily have a brûlée sugar topping added if you wish. Serves 6-8 (depending on the size of your ramekins) INGREDIENTS
1 lemon skin thinly pared with a vegetable peeler 600ml double cream 4 large egg yolks 6 tablespoons caster sugar 200g raspberries or blackberries or any other fruit
METHOD 1. Place the double cream in a saucepan and put the lemon skin in. Gently heat on the hob until it reaches scalding point, then remove from the heat and allow to infuse for about 30 minutes. 2. Meanwhile, whisk the egg yolks and caster sugar until light and creamy, and once the cream has infused pour the cream over the egg yolks and sugar, whisking all the time. 3. Return the custard to the saucepan and place over a low heat. Stir continuously until the custard
TIP: If you want to make a brûlée topping, once the custard is set cover with a layer of Demerara sugar and place under a very hot grill. Watch carefully as it will caramelise very quickly. starts to thicken and feels velvety, about 20 minutes. If you think it’s cooking too quickly, just remove it from the heat and continue to stir. Once the custard is thick, remove from the heat and allow to cool slightly. 4. Divide the fruit, if using, between the ramekins and strain the custard through a sieve before pouring into the ramekins over the fruit. Allow to set in a fridge for at least 2 hours before indulging!

World Space Week: 4 - 10 October WHERE ART AND SPACE COLLIDE
Art writer Kristy Campbell looks closely at the ‘otherwordly’ work of Norwich artist Benjamin Beauchamp
T
he theme for World Space Week this year is ‘The Moon: Gateway to the Stars’. Space education and the news of World Space Week is broadcast globally through a compilation of space themed events, including clubs and societies, craft modelling, lectures, parties and more. Educational resources are available for a myriad of contexts to be used by teachers, facilitators and supporters in multiple languages, including lessons on Space Suit Design to Descriptive Writing, and Space Missions to reviewing novels. So, why the Moon? 2019 marks the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11 and man’s first step on the Moon These vast and otherworldly achievements enable mankind to stretch their understanding of ‘what’s out there’, while providing a wealth of information regarding science, technology, and history. An innovative contemporary of the Norwich art scene, Benjamin Beauchamp, has granted us insight into his stunning methodological practice through a very poetic interview. Describing himself as an “intermittent wrangle of words,” Beauchamp reveals how the world (and worlds) around us impress on his compositions. He says: “I am perpetually intrigued by societal interactions, communication technologies and engaging in a critical discourse surrounding the man/machine dichotomy. Debaucherous reality is made monstrous by unconscious perceptions rendered conspicuous through my endeavours. I dream a body electric. I devour science fiction and fantasy with reckless abandon, through reading, audiobooks, television and film, whilst laying half in a doze with news of the world filtering in through the radio, and play with reality through conversation, until palpable, to mould deviant ideas into contained forms.
Space is the final frontier, the gaps between thoughts and logic, speculative ideas run amok, philosophy with a phaser spark my ideas, and I see a world of monster in every downcast face. The stars look very di erent today, sailors do not steer by their waning light, but tempers cast them upon mysterious islands of impending calamity.” Not dissimilar to the boundlessness of space is the nature of invention and the artist’s imagination, certainly as food for thought. MEMORIES OF BURSTON Local historian, Dennis Cross from Diss, shares with us his fascinating collection of old postcards, focusing on a di erent village in every issue. This issue, we take a walk down memory lane in Burston.
Burstton Stattion 1 1 A Lond don bound d Claud de Hamilton express can be seen passing through at 60mph. Platforms were removed when the passenger service stopped, and the signal box went in the 1 0s when gates were replaced by barriers
Burston Board School 1905. The school and the master’s house were built in 18 1875 for £850. The school was enlarged in 1895, to accommodate a further 90 ch hildren, costing a further £140. Mr W William Thomas Sutton was headmaster an nd the population of the village was 314.

ith their ability to curl into a tight, spiky ball, hedgehogs are probably Britain’s most recognisable land mammal. They are simple souls, happy foraging for earthworms, beetles or other invertebrates and are found in towns and villages as well as the countryside. In summer, baby ‘hoglets’ are born in a nest of grass and will start foraging with their mother after a few weeks. In late autumn or winter, hedgehogs will hibernate in a snug pile of leaves, usually at the base of a hedge, under logs or low scrub. Sadly, hedgehogs are now widely considered endangered, largely due to a loss of habitat for foraging, hibernating and breeding. Increased pressure from building development, danger from roads and changes to the way we farm and garden have had a serious impact on this species, which thrives in a landscape where scrub, ponds and rough grassland are connected by hedges. For the hedgehogs on our doorstep, there are many

ways to give them a helping hand: one of the most important is to make sure that hedgehogs can pass easily between gardens — a hole the size of a CD in walls or fences is enough to let them through. It’s unlikely that any one garden will be enough for a creature that can forage up to 2km in one night, so it’s vital to work with neighbours along a street or in a village to ensure safe highways. Gardeners can also join forces to ensure a range of habitats along a street, as not everyone will want a pond or have space for a good-sized pile of logs. Gardens need low shrubs, hedges, piles of sticks or logs and wild corners for breeding or hibernation
Nature sites. Leave these areas undisturbed over winter and give long grass or wilder areas a quick check before strimming or clearing. Likewise, check compost bins, leaf piles, bonfires and pampas grass before clearing or burning. If you buy or make a hedgehog home, leave it in a quiet corner of the garden and clean it out when itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s empty (check first Hedgehogs need access to water all year and a shallow bowl of water will be welcomed in hot weather, but make sure ponds have a ramp or gently sloping edge so they can get in and out safely. Some garden chemicals can be harmful to hedgehogs, although the most harmful slug pellets are now banned from sale. Avoid garden chemicals wherever possible, tie up sports or garden netting when not in use and use taut or rigid netting that hedgehogs cannot become tangled in.

Making gardens hedgehog friendly is an important step on the road to recovery for this distinctive little animal, and the reward of seeing them snu ing about at night makes the e ort well worthwhile If you find a hedgehog in distress, especially a late autumn baby thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s too small to hibernate, keep it in a pet carrier or box with high sides and with direct access to heat, such as a hot water bottle or even a plastic bottle filled with warm water wrapped in a towel. o, we are o for a little holiday Any movement whatsoever used to ignite my dog into paroxysms of excitement, manifesting itself by grabbing everything and anything in his mouth between drinking water compulsively Nowadays I can sashay between kitchen and living room, bags in hand, and not a flicker
The emergence of clothing, walking gear, his travelling bed, towels and blanket all elicit no more than the odd blink from those to ee brown eyes Even the ultimate test – measuring out enough kibble for our time away from home, together with re uisite biscuits and sweet potato – nil points’ All this has been achieved by gradual desensitisation Daily walks used to be prefaced by a doggy whirling dervish impression but, gradually, gradually the hysteria reduced, then disappeared Every morning I would prepare to take him for a walk and then, as soon as his repertoire began, I’d uietly sit down and read my book I wouldn’t move until he went away and laid down, fully relaxed, paying me no attention After five minutes or so I would resume my activities, only to cease again when he became het up It sounds arduous and was, for an impatient person like me, extremely irritating, but the rewards were soon apparent and the feeling of calm, coupled with success’, was most gratifying The dog soon learned that calm behaviour resulted in getting outside for that walk, or en oyable and constructive play, depending on how things were progressing Desensitisation was furthered by fetching the lead, wellies’ and gloves at other times during the day It’s essential to do this without any reference to the dog no eye contact or speaking I simply handled the items, put them by the door and carried on with what I was doing In this way the items became far less triggering and my dog began to learn that I initiated any action that may or may not take place when I was ready Now, patience is certainly needed, but what I asked myself was do you want to expend energy feeling frustrated and cross with the dog, or expend energy knowing you are, minute by minute, moving towards your goal, keeping your cool and yes my favourite – getting somewhere?
By behaving in this way the owner, as pack leader, initiates activity, clearly signalling the dog’s subordinate position within the pack Excitement is inappropriate The dog is not in charge The alpha pair in any canine pack are not approached until bidden and always initiate The Hunt’ walk In fact, excitable behaviour also relates directly to perceived danger’ Barging through the door and overexcitable behaviour on the walk, again, confirms that a dog believes itself to be in charge pack leader , and therefore responsible for protecting other pack members on the walk We therefore return straight to the necessity for addressing the excitability – before venturing forth This article reflects the knowledge I have gained through graduating from Jan Fennell’s Amichien Bonding’ course, together with my own experiences – successes and failures Every canine is hardwired to need the harmony and order found within the pack Amichien Bonding’ teaches us how to communicate e ectively with our dogs using their own language, thus enabling us to understand and successfully interact with our remarkably intelligent pets It would be great to hear from any readers about their own canine experiences, so do please email me at ulia walkso ife.co.uk

Japanese food for beginners The concept of Japanese cuisine can be a little daunting for some people, so in this article Charlotte Nakamoto, who owns Momiji Japanese Restaurant in Harleston with her husband aka talks about Japanese food and the different styles of dining.
I
n Japan, most restaurants specialise in a particular type of food, such as sushi, noodles, high class seasonal cuisine (with a price tag to match), or tempura; deliciously light battered vegetables and seafood such as tiger prawns, squid and soft shell crab. You name it, there’s a restaurant specialising in it! If you are looking for a variety of dishes, you would head to the local izakaya for a relaxed evening of eating and drinking. The dining style is communal, like Spanish tapas, and the dishes are cooked to order and brought to your table as soon as they are ready — where they are snapped up by hungry chopstick wielding diners! Everyone can try a bit of everything and if something gets the thumbs up you just order another plate. Dishes can include edamame beans, stu ed dumplings, katsu curry, juicy marinated salmon, or pan fried steak with ginger and honey. Many restaurants in Japan will have a set menu,

and this takes the stress out of ordering and works particularly well for beginners or large groups. It comprises a variety of dishes to give a cross section of the menu, at an attractive price. Izakaya restaurants in Japan don’t generally serve sushi, due to the expertise required and the need for supremely fresh fish on a daily basis There is nothing better than made-to-order deliciously fresh sushi, and using sushi grade fish is a must But it’s not all about the fish For sushi chefs, getting the rice just right is a real art, with many techniques available. Sushi rice is a perfect balance of cooked rice, salt, sugar and either red or white vinegar, sometimes sake. The best chefs take their time with this specific process, as it can make the most amount of di erence to the taste Japanese food really does have something for everyone. So why not give it a go — it’s relaxing, delicious and your taste buds will love you forever?!

Let’s not confuse this bad plastic, and indeed other forms of packaging that we can’t currently recycle, with those plastic items that are multiple use.

It’s all well and good buying a product thinking that the packaging is being recycled, or indeed doing something less environmentally harmful with it ourselves, like Ecobricking, or sending it for recycling. But we still end up with packaging as a brick or with it being recycled at home or abroad. But is it actually recycled, or being dumped? We need to REFUSE to take the packaging, resulting in less need for disposal or indeed having to pick it up as litter in our countryside.

The Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall BBC TV programme about plastics ran a short term campaign to return plastic to the supermarkets with each piece marked with the hashtag #ourplasticfeedback. That campaign has finished, but many people are still returning unwanted plastic in person, and by post, back to the supermarket where it was acquired. continues his fascinating tales from his days as an auctioneer, this time reminiscing about various scams
remember a furniture dealer buying a houseful of 0 paintings for ust £10 each, all by an artist called Batchelder. Thinking himself smart, and to push the price up, he then entered as many as he could in every local saleroom and in all local papers under a box number £100 will be paid for any painting by Batchelder’ Needless to say he got no replies! There were local cattle market type auctioneers who, by tradition, would pay out during the sale if required to do so. One dealer going bad emptied his anti ue stock into such a weekly sale Someone completely unknown to the auctioneers bought most of it and was never seen again The dealer had already been paid out and the auctioneers were stuck with a load of unsaleable goods
In the 1 0s people were told not to sell their anti ues to knockers people who came calling at the door yet many fell victim to scams There was a fellow with a pom pom hat who would call asking for pianos, saying he could give £200 for any piano. A lot of old households still had them and would get rid of them at any price. In fact there used to be piano breaking contests held at village fetes. Come in, they would say, whereupon pom pom would tinkle the ivories then yes that’s fine
Now I can also give excellent prices for so and so in fact whatever he could see Then he would ask for tin trunks, as these were usually put in the attic and probably full of old silver trinkets that no one could be bothered to clean Pom pom would then have a tally up, having cleaned them out of anything any good, and pay them for everything apart from the piano, saying that as he could not take it on his own, Jim and Fred would pick it up next week and pay them then. When I used to go around there were loads of people with £ 00 pianos waiting for Jim and Fred and talking of allegedly wonderful prices they had got for other things It was rumoured that pom pom had thus similarly acquired a bracket clock inscribed Edward, East London’ and try as he might he could find no record of an Edward of East London, so moved it on uite cheaply The bracket clock was of course by Edward East of London, one of this country’s finest clockmakers so divine providence seemed to rule after all! The Earsham Street Café, Bungay, is a welcoming and homely place, clean with generously spaced tables, and not at all noisy. There are about 15 tables inside the building and a dozen more outside in a glass-covered courtyard, where shade is provided by table parasols and verdant green things in pots. We opted to stay indoors as it was extremely hot out there. The service by a team of pleasant ladies came ith a s il and as risk and i nt We asked for a menu and a glass of tap water for me, as I find alcohol far too heating on a day like this Alice had Posh Pop, which was ginger beer with chilli I asked for ice to be added to my water to make it more palatable The menu was eight pages of A and printed on dark brown paper, making it a little di cult to read but there were at least four pages of food specially for vegetarians, vegans, lactose intolerant, and gluten free, and also for children I narrowed it down to a meat and salad platter £11 and actually remembered to ask the lady to omit any raw onion Alice had a crayfish salad with bread and mayonnaise My food arrived on a wooden platter, which I was not keen on, but as so many of the elements of the meal were in individual ramekins I forgave them The first thing I spotted on my plate was homemade chutney, followed by bean salad and Brie, which I tend to cut the rind o , but which Alice sco ed rather smartly This was accompanied by a pile of lettuce, some celery, cucumber and yellow pepper in a dressing and some good old English boiled ham Also, there was a decent sized slice of local cheese There were two slices of di erent garlic sausage and some cured and dried meat, which I really en oyed And, finally, lovely s uishy sun dried tomatoes in olive oil Alice be ueathed me a few bits of her crayfish and she still had more than enough These came on a bed of mixed salad and Alice made short work of them, declaring her choice very tasty and filling Then came my favourite part of the meal puddings Ginger sponge with syrup and cream chocolate cr me
br lée which, sadly for Alice, had proved so popular that there was none of it left and date and almond cookie Also baked cheesecake with cream, caramel sauce and a piece of honeycomb This latter would be perfect for me Alice opted for ice cream, which she seemed to en oy with my little ug of fresh cream In addition to the caramel sauce and honeycomb, the cream was ust one calorie too far for me The café is licensed for alcohol and there are toys and books for children Dogs and bikes are welcome in the covered courtyard garden and there are bike racks at the rear of the garden We will go again next time we are in Bungay to sample some of the scrumptious cakes we spotted in the window Bottom line without alcohol or co ee was £

Falcon Meadow
A special award for a special place Laura Myatt, from Falcon Meadow Community Trust, shares some good news about an award win
E
veryone involved in Falcon Meadow has been inspired by the project to conserve and preserve this wonderful piece of ancient land by the River Waveney. We are thrilled that the hard work of so many people has now been o cially recognised by the prestigious Norfolk Community Biodiversity Awards scheme, which celebrates the achievements of groups and individuals in enhancing habitat and helping people to enjoy nature. Falcon Meadow Community Trust has been highly commended for its work in helping to make the four-acre meadow an integral part of the community by engaging people of all ages and from all backgrounds in conservation work and fundraising. What makes this award so special is that the conservation project has captured the imagination of, and united, the whole community, and it’s the culmination of four years of tireless work by a host of volunteers. People who give up their precious time come rain or shine to do the hard physical work needed to develop and maintain the meadow, plus many others who are fundraising and beavering away to make it all happen.
The result is a superb space that’s now not only a haven for flora and fauna, much of it rare and protected, but also a wonderful public space for dog walking, canoeing, wildlife watching, fishing and for all the great community events we hold such as the annual Duck Race, Dog Show, bat and moth sleep-outs, and many others. The uncertain future of this superb local water meadow has now been secured, and both wildlife and the public can enjoy it for many years to come. The much-loved meadow is a very unusual place, because it’s the only remaining riverside green space accessible to local people, so its sale into private hands would have meant a significant loss to people and, potentially, nature. Falcon Meadow really is at the heart of our community, and as a trust it’s our aim to engage as many people as possible, whether they are happy to get their hands dirty in a working party, take their children wild camping for the first time, or take part in craft or social events to help raise funds. This year we have come into contact with around 70% of the population of Bungay through our range of activities, and there are very few communities which can boast this level of engagement and
enthusiasm. We are very lucky that in Bungay extraordinary numbers of people are willing to get involved in community projects. The sheer joy and pleasure that people of all ages get from the meadow is so satisfying and it makes all the hard work worthwhile. So this award is for everyone who has worked so hard. Well done! A huge thank you for all your time and e ort, it couldn’t have happened without you and it’s so great to get a pat on the back! A
lthough we don’t actually have a formal celebration of Halloween in the village, pumpkin lanterns mushroom on front steps and gardens as the end of October approaches. The dog is both tricked and treated by these decapitated orange heads, grinning toothily from porch and lawn, as we make our way past on daily walks – chilly now the mornings are sharper and the afternoons shorter. A yolky sun illuminates the trees and, yes, the weather can still be glorious, but the build-up is slower now and the warmth fades swiftly as teatime approaches. It’s back to the body warmer, scarf and gloves The cornflake crunch of fallen leaves and that certain nip in the air have set the seal on summer’s departure. It is quiz season. What could be better than piling into the Village Hall on a Friday evening, the week’s toil freshly showered o , bottle of plonk in hand? Gossip and nibbles are swapped, tidbits absorbed and even the odd question answered. It’s dark when we emerge, peeling from the fug into a surprising chill. Relaxed and refreshed, we have the luxurious prospect of two days’ ‘rest’ to look forward to. It’s a full year since 12 of us did our First Aid training. Over the course of three weeks, Wednesday evenings in the Village Hall revealed ever more alarming scenarios we could be presented with. Hot, sweet tea was needed just to see us through the videos – burns and scalds, gashes and heart attacks. Possessed of new knowledge both comforting and
alarming, how carefully we made our respective ways home, danger now lurking in every ditch and hedgerow. A refresher is now due, and we await our reunion with the plastic cadavers. Mouth shields at the ready, acronyms relearned Hello, can you hear me? I’m here to help,” phone on loudspeaker and check for a pulse. November 5 is swift upon the heels of ‘All Saints’, yielding at least a week of pops and bangs. Our pyro‘technic’ local is happy to impress. Are we celebrating or under attack one wonders, as mortar strength explosions rock cottage, house and barn? As children we wrote our names in the cold night air with red hot sparklers, and delighted in the gorgeous red or green plumes of a Bengal Light, a mere match-strike away. We would pore over the glass counter in toyshop, hardware store or garage, mesmerised by rockets, roman candles and Catherine wheels. The wrappers alone conjured whooshes, sparks and cascades, and our excitement was deepened by anticipation, and the need for a ‘responsible adult’ to light the blue touch paper. Back then, just as now, we loved sausages and to ee apples so much more delicious consumed outside. We might not have had hummus, salsa and guacamole, but jacket potatoes ruled the night. Spuds so old and grey that, once successfully scrubbed clean, a lengthy sojourn in the oven yielded ambrosial flu to flood with butter, and skins you could have fashioned into moccasins.

W
hen I started school in the 1950s, in the play breaks we enjoyed some traditional games that dated back a hundred years or more. One that I remember well was a quaint old fashioned singing game called “We’ve come to see Poor Jenny Jones.” Two rows of children lined up, holding hands and facing each other, and two of us were chosen to be Jenny Jones and her mother. They stood apart by the wall, and the ‘mother’ held her skirt wide to try and conceal Jenny from our sight, as we marched forward, singing: “We’ve come to see Poor Jenny Jones, Poor Jenny Jones, Poor Jenny Jones, We’ve come to see Poor Jenny Jones, and how is she now.” The mother replied: “Poor Jenny Jones is sweeping, sweeping, sweeping, Poor Jenny Jones is sweeping, you can’t see her now.” The girl playing Jenny would make sweeping movements as if she was using a long-handled broom. In the following verses the mother made excuses that “Poor Jenny” was washing, ironing, scrubbing, so still couldn’t be seen. But then it was announced that “Poor Jenny Jones is ill” — her mother didn’t wish to reveal her illness and had just been making excuses. The song continues with “Poor Jenny Jones is dying,” and finally “Poor Jenny Jones is DEAD.” Two of the children pick her up by her shoulders and feet, lie her flat, close her eyes and clasp her hands across her breast, while all the children mop their eyes, and join in the last sad verse. The
game begins again with two di erent children playing Poor Jenny and her mother. A very mournful theme, which may have reflected children’s experiences of losing brothers and sisters in the Georgian and Victorian periods when there was a high mortality rate. In rural villages it was common for young girls to be carried to the grave by their female companions. A couple of years ago I was walking past the Primary School playground in Wingfield Street, and heard the children chanting noisily “You’ve been banned from the BIG BROTHER HOUSE!” I was shocked — surely seven and eight year olds shouldn’t be up watching an adult TV programme well past their bedtimes! But perhaps Victorian adults were just as shocked at children playing morbid games like “Jenny Jones.”

HOW TO LOSE ‘mummy tummy’….quickly! Coltishall Clinic looks at treatments that can beat the post-baby bulge
M
any women struggle to lose ‘mummy tummy’. Pregnancy stretches the abdominal skin and muscles, and hormonal changes cause the body to store fat and fluid. While a lot of these changes get better with time, many mums struggle to get back to their prebaby shape. Combine this with an increasing workload, childcare, work and family pressures — it’s difficult to find time for long hours of exercise and calorie counting unless you have a lot of help. To top this, if you do manage to lose weight, you find fat disappears from areas you don’t want it to, such as your face or bust, but those persistent fatty deposits on your tummy just won’t shift! And if you’ve had a caesarean, the scar often tethers down the skin and results in a small bulge of overhanging fat above. So what can you do? If you’re gradually getting back into shape and happy with the progress you’re making then that’s great, carry on with the good work. But if you’re struggling there are a few alternatives that can get your body back into the shape you want. One of the best modern solutions is laser liposculpture, which literally sculpts your new body shape with a laser. If you have excess skin then you might consider a mini tummy tuck, which is a
good option if you also want a scar revision. The advantage of this over a traditional tummy tuck is that recovery is quick and you don’t have a long scar. If you have stretch marks and loose skin, this can be tighttened by non-surgical treatments. Fat dissolving injections can be good for small areas of fatt, but not recommended for larger areas. Therre is a lot of controve ersy about their use an nd when you consider th he cost of the injections to achieve mild resultss at best, laser liposu uction is a far superior op ption, because it’s minimally invasive and provides ‘w wow’ results at comparable cost. But don’t ru ush into a treatment, it’s very important to wait at least a yearr after childbirth before considering g any surgical opttions.

Who cares for the carers?
lmost one in eight people in Norfolk are looking after a friend or family member who, due to illness, disability or an addiction, can’t manage without their support. Being a carer takes many forms: they might be older people caring for spouses with dementia, working adults caring for elderly parents, parents caring for children with special educational needs, or a child providing care for a parent or sibling. All unpaid carers are entitled to support, but many find it hard to navigate their way through the services available. In recognition of this, Norfolk County Council has funded a comprehensive support service for carers, called Carers Matter Norfolk, which o ers
paid carer workforce, yet often no real training is given. Carers Matter Norfolk has created the ’s first dedicated Carer’s Self Help Hub with over 450 online videos, podcasts and training courses in areas such as general healthcare, first aid, infection, nutrition and how to navigate the healthcare system. Carers Voice We provide a forum for carers to share their views, keep in touch with each other, and access over 140 peer support groups.

hen Tom and Amy Stevenson made their wedding vows to one another a year ago, the words ‘in sickness and in health’ could not have been more poignant. This courageous couple, who celebrated their first wedding anniversary on 1 September, undertook a journey of faith, hope and prayer when Tom was diagnosed with a grade four aggressive brain tumour just after he proposed to Amy. But despite everything they continued to make plans for their wedding reception at Norwich Cathedral. Together with their church they stood defiant against the odds, believing and trusting God would heal. Tom explains: “After gruelling treatment and lots of prayer, doctors gave the all clear, although they fully expected the tumour to have grown again. It was a big miracle.” The Wymondham maintenance man underwent a seven-hour operation, 30 sessions of radiotherapy and six months of chemotherapy in 2017, with Amy often at his side. In addition, the couple sought prayer from a Christian team from Andrew Womack Ministries. “Since then the colour came back into my cheeks, I became more lively and I was healed,” says Tom. Amy bought her wedding dress before the hospital scans revealed that the tumour had gone. She says: “I was trusting God that he had put us together for a reason and we set the date, because if God really wanted us to get married Tom would be well. We lived in hope and faith and had our wedding day as a positive focus amid the di culties Saying the vows, in sickness and in health, was so real because having gone through what we did they meant a lot.”

Tom says: “When the day came it was incredible. I felt so loved by friends and family and I could not stop smiling. People were so generous with their time and they were so excited that we were getting married.”
In April 2017 Tom had a blackout and, while awaiting an investigative MRI scan, he su ered a seizure, collapsed and was taken to hospital. “Tests revealed a tumour on the right side of my brain,” he says. “At first, I was shocked and angry because I had ust proposed to Amy, but my faith has been enlarged and I am fully committed to Jesus who healed me. Although I still have an MRI scan every three months, I am not defined by what happened and together we are looking to the future.”
For Tom, it was the second time he had battled with health issues. “When I was three my parents went through a worrying time when I had a non-cancerous tumour at the back of my left eye to the bottom of the brain stem and an operation removed 80% of the

e all know how important it is to make a will that reflects our wishes However, what you may not be aware of is that most wills are very basic, and provide no real protection for your assets Even if you’ve made your will, your house, savings and other assets could still be at risk of significant losses during your lifetime and beyond Lifetime trusts are an excellent way to ensure that, after your death, your assets go only to those you want to receive them So, what kind of losses should we all be concerned about? Relationship breakdown If you have children, you probably want them to inherit your estate after you’re gone, but what about their partners? Did you know that if you leave your property to your child, you are putting that property at risk of being included in a divorce settlement in the event of that child’s relationship breaking down? This is of course a huge risk and could mean that your property is sold and a share of the proceeds given to your child’s ex partner This also applies to your own relationships, especially if you have children from previous relationships They could lose out on their inheritance should your relationship fail in the future

USING AN INDEPENDENT MORTGAGE BROKER is a smart move
M
ortgage rates may have fallen sharply in recent years, but that doesn’t mean the job of finding the most suitable home loan has got any easier The number of di erent mortgages on o er is mind boggling and even if you’ve already worked out whether it’s a variable rate or fixed rate product that’s best, you still need to fathom how long you want to fix for, weigh up all the fees and try to figure out the cheapest deal for you Unlike loans or credit cards the answer isn’t as simple as looking at a best buy table on a comparison website, although many lenders still market attention grabbing interest rates, hoping this will be su cient to win custom from those who don’t take the time to shop around or use the services of an independent mortgage broker. Unfortunately, some lenders only sell their products directly via branch networks or, increasingly, online — a situation which has hit the brokers hard.
Banks and building g societies continue to develop p products with profit margins based on a wide range of rate and fee combinations, and while this may work for their business, for the man on the street it can be a big headache. One of the biggest problems for consumers is working out which is the most appropriate mortgage based on the total cost, which means not just the interest rate but also the associated fees which
can vary enormously between lenders, Loan to Value (LTV) and individual products. Choosing the right mortgage product isn’t a two minute job, because it’s not a case of one mortgage fits all The best deal will also depend on your own personal circumstances, including the length of the term and the amount you’re looking to borrow. It doesn’t help matters when you see newspaper front pages proclaiming ‘lowest ever’ mortgage rates — in reality the media has fallen for the PR and marketing hype and failed to factor in the impact of four digit associated fees.
