46 b ARABIAN HORSE WORLD

The Swedish National Show was held later than usual, on the 16-17 of August, at the popular facilities of Mickedala in Halmstad. Seventy-six horses were shown in the great outside arena before the trio of judges, Mr. Pierluigi Rota from Italy, Mr. Jaroslav Lacina from the Czech Republic, and Mr. Knut Kentsrud from Norway. Saturday morning began with the toughest class of the weekend, the Gelding class. It was great to see such high quality among the geldings, including two previous Swedish National Champion Geldings, Gaugan (Endel x Galaxja) and Piraten (Endel x Poreka), a Swedish National Junior Champion Colt, MA El Panhos (El Yashmir x Palma), a Swedish National Reserve Junior Champion Colt and Kumla International Junior Champion Colt and Best in Show, QA Dzocco (Om El Tanam x WW Dzoraya), as well as the 2008 Kumla International Champion Gelding Solari Saman (Hillman x Sadza) in the class. With the highest score of 39.33, MA El Panhos won the class and consequently the Championship. He was bred by Miedl Arabians and was sold to Strรถmma School this spring. He is used as a riding school horse and has been a great ambassador for the Arabian

horse, says Kent Johansson of Strömma School. The Reserve Champion and second-placed horse in the class was another great mover, the bay Solari Saman, bred and owned by Eva and Martin Larsson. The Swedish breeders have had access to great stallions leased to Sweden, and many breeders use semen from abroad. The results could be seen in the filly and colt classes. The quality of the young horses was extremely good and of the top five-placed fillies two years old, four of them were by the World Junior Reserve Champion El Amin (Psytadel x RA Cool Elygance). El Amin bred 31 mares when on lease to Oppreva Arabians in 2005. He returned to Oppreva in 2008 and has been the most popular stallion during the season. The winner with 39.67 points among the twoyear-old fillies was Luanda (El Amin x Lidia), bred and owned by Frode Flaten and Birgit Nistad, shown by Oppreva Arabians. Blommeröd Arabian Stud’s bay Certa (El Amin x Certina) captured the second place with 39 points. Blommeröd won the Best Swedish Breeder award, and one of the Blommeröd stars is the stunning Khidar daughter Bacarolla. She received 41.33 points and was later named Swedish National Reserve Junior Champion Filly. Bacarolla’s dam Baronna is a great-moving mare by the World Champion Stallion Emperator (Menes x Ellavia) and out of Bona (Pionier x Bombina).

The Futurity Champion among fillies was won by Rebekkah LL, bred by Limelight Arabians and owned by Marina Tjörnvik. Rebekkah LL was the class winner at the National Show in 2007. She placed sixth in the class this year, but went on to be the Futurity winner. Rebekkah LL is by AJA Sanagor and out of the Blommeröd-bred mare Relacja (Algorytm x Regina). The class with colts two years old had five entries, and the two U.S. imported colts SF Verify (Marwan Al Shaqab x Veronica GA) and Tristin BP (PFC Trevallon x Jafars Shania) both received 39 points. With one more point for type, SF Verify placed first and Tristin BP second. SF Verify was bred by Patti Scheier and is owned by Verify Partners. He was shown by Magnus Tingshagen. Tristin BP was bred by Kevin Mansfield and Bill Chaney and is owned by Black Arabians of Sweden. One week later he was shown at the Finnish National Show where he was Junior Champion Colt, Most Classic Head winner, and Best in Show. His full sister Trevs Jasmine was imported to Sweden in June by Kathleen Ohlsson, Black Arabians of Sweden. She was also shown in Finland where she went on to be Champion Mare. The winner of the three-year-old class with 40.67 points was the Nordic Show Cup winner TA Nox (WPB Minstrils Bajar x Narinne), shown by his breeders and owners Cathrin and Andreas Nehm, Tärenäs Arabians. TA Nox always impresses with his movements and his show attitude. Earlier in July, he was named the Scandinavian Open Junior Champion. TA Nox went on to be Swedish National Junior Champion Colt. Second place in the class went to Wivace (AJA Sanagor x Witia) with 38.67 points. TA Nox also received the Futurity colt champion title, an award given to the best three-year-old Futurity horse. Usually the mare classes have a lot of entries, but that was not the case this year. Only two horses in each class were shown among the mares four to seven years old with and without foals. The winner with foal at side was the elegant, great-

moving Baske Afire daughter Rohara Bask Melody with impressive 42 points. She was bred by Terry Anne Boggs in the United States and was bought as a yearling by Mr. Reijo Jokiniemi, Naples Arabians. She was shown by Magnus Tingshagen with a colt by Naples Arabians’ stallion Rohara Bacara (Padrons Psyche x Sidia) at side. The class without foal at side was won by MA Etropica, a snow-white mare with great movements. She was imported in utero from Poland and she is by the race champion and Polish National Champion Pamir (Probat x Parma) out of Eina (Ararat x Ejnia). MA Etropica is owned by Miedl Arabians. Another pure Polish mare won the class of mares eight to eleven years old. Berninna (Chock x Bernatka) received 41 points and she was shown to her victory by Maria Holgersson. Berninna was bred and is owned by Ewa and Micke Jacobson, Q-Arabians. She was named Kumla International Champion Mare earlier this season. Second place went to another mare from Miedl Arabians — MA Barzelona (Eldon x Bazylika), also imported in utero from Poland. This pretty mare was awarded 40 points.

The winner of the older mares with 40.67 points is a crowd favorite with her fantastic movements, Gemini, by the Blommeröd stallion Algorytm (Algomej x Aleksota), who unfortunately passed away prior to the show at the age of 25, and out of Galaxja (Engano x Aleksja). She was bred by Blommeröd Arabian Stud and is owned by Folke and Eva Persson, and was shown by Johanna Ullström. The mare championship went to Rohara Bask Melody and Berninna was named Reserve Champion. Sunday morning started with two great yearling classes. The filly class is usually the largest of the show, and it was the same this time with 12 entries. The 2006 Swedish National Reserve Junior Champion Colt Thee Apprentice (Versace x Legacys Diva) had his first three offspring born last year, and two of them were shown here, placing first and second. Jumilla (by Thee Apprentice) is out of the pretty mare Artemis (Borneo x Ashiqa), one of four successful siblings. Jumilla was bred by Moëll and Moëll and the Dolfe family and she won easily 41.33 points. She is at the European Training Centre and was shown by Johanna Ullström. Jumilla has been sold to Dubai Stud and we will definitely see more of this lovely filly. Jumilla was the Scandinavian Open Reserve Junior Champion and at this show she was the

unanimous Junior Champion Filly. Later in the fall, Jumilla was named European Reserve Junior Champion Filly, a great victory for her Swedish breeders. Second place with 38.67 points went to JB Fforget Me Not (Thee Apprentice x JB Ffemme Ffatal). She was bred and is owned by Oppreva Arabians. Nine yearling colts were shown, with first place going to the tall, pretty WH Justice son Judgement (out of Sensation) with 40.67 points. He was bred by Penelope Lewenhaupt and is owned by W-Arabians, Veronica Mann-Wernsten. Judgement was shown by Johanna Ullström and received 40.67 points. Later that day, he was selected as the Reserve Champion Colt. Second place with 39.67 points went to the bay Marwan, who is by CE Magnum (Magnum Psyche x RA Cool Elygance) and out of the great producer Margotka (Algorytm x Maskarada), the dam of Dubai Gold Cup winner Magora (by Gazal Al Shaqab). It was interesting to see the stallions four to seven years of age. Polish-bred Girlan-Bey (Pesal x Gracja-Bis) has an impressive show record: Polish National Junior Champion and Best in Show; International Champion Colt, Vilhelmsborg; Champion Colt, Borgloon; Reserve European Champion Colt; winner of the Ecaho cup colts; World Champion Reserve; and Swedish National Junior Champion Colt. Girlan-Bey is now six years old and made his debut in the showring this year as a senior. He was bred by Mr. Michal Bogajewicz and is owned by the Kristofferson family. He was awarded 42.33 points, the highest score at the show, and later he added another title to his record when he was named Swedish National Champion Stallion. Mambo (Khidar x J & J Aqina) was bred by Mr. Ben Goossens in Belgium and was bought by Wilza Arabian stud as a colt. He was 2004 Swedish National Junior Champion Colt, and his 40.67 points gave him second place and later the Reserve Champion Stallion title, shown by Johanna Ullström. The winner among the older class was Veronica Mann-Wernsten’s eight-year-old stallion Naizaak (Gai Radiant x Bint Naradnaia) with 40.33 points. Naizaak was bred by Sue Richards in the UK and was shown to this victory by Maria Holgersson. With the judges’ choice of Jumilla as the Best in Show, another Swedish National show came to an end, concluding the show season in Sweden.

NOVEMBER s RIBEIRĂŽO PRETO SĂŽO PAULO BRAZIL

No matter where you are in the world, the Arabian horse has its own universal language. Recently I was honored to be asked to judge the beautiful Arabian horses in Brazil. We were treated very well and had the opportunity to see some highquality animals with both type and good conformation. I shared this experience with Marianne Tengstedt from Denmark; Bruce McCrea from Saudi Arabia; Chris Culbreth from Scottsdale, Arizona; and Leonardo Pinheiro Machado of Brazil. We were well taken care of by Maria Helena Vidal, “high priestessâ€? of all escorts and interpreters. The directors of the AssociacĂŁo Brasileira do Criadores do Cavalo Arabe worked hard to put on a world-class horse show and achieved their goal. The show took place in RibeirĂŁo Preto, which is a four-hour drive from SĂŁo Paulo across beautiful Brazilian countryside. The moment we entered the show arena, it was evident that a special event was about to take place. It was a feast for the eye, with festive colors and well-planned decorations. The back wall was decorated with large painted signs representing the various events and breeders. The ceiling was sconced, the center pillar was decorated with color, plants, and lighting, and the ground was covered with green and yellow shavings for most of the show. There was a party atmosphere all around the arena with tables and boxes with decorated booths behind them for entertaining exhibitors and spectators. The flags from our respective countries hanging over the judges room 58 b ARABIAN HORSE WORLD

made us feel welcome and connected. We had fresh food and beverages available to us at all times. The weather ranged from warm to hot each day, but our room was air conditioned when the heat was oppressive. We appreciated the fact that our hosts made sure that our needs were met instead of leaving us to fend for ourselves. The scheduling itself was a rare treat for an American judge. Starting times at 10:00 a.m. with a proper amount of time for meals keeps you fresh and makes you eager to get back, resume judging, and enjoy the horse show. The class schedule is designed to have the exhibitors, judges, and spectators finished by 6:00 p.m. so everyone has time to shower, rest, eat a decent meal, and socialize in the evening. What a concept! The breeders of Brazil are very serious about producing high-quality Arabian horses. The bloodlines represent many different countries worldwide, and are blended to produce the desired aninmal. The senior champion stallion was such a horse. Laman HVP (Don El Chall x Padrons Love Song) was the last horse to enter the arena during the five-day show, and he made a perfect impression on all of us, being named unanimous champion. His extreme face and ears and his alabaster coat typified the romantic beauty that draws Arabian lovers from all over the world together. Laman HVP is owned by Carlos Roizner. The senior champion mare class was deep and highly competitive. One mare clearly rose to the top: LL Beauty Dream, sired by Bey Shadow TGS out of Touch A Dream. Her free movement and expression as she trotted into the arena made her a contender immediately. LL Beauty Dream is owned by Haras La Laguna and was bred by Alfredo Hasbun Hirmas. The reserve champion was the lovely dark chestnut mare Psynsation (Padrons Psyche x Kaiynda Special) who was bred in America by Richard DeWalt and is owned by Pedro Franciso do Amaral.

brazilian nationals Another group that stands out in this judge’s memory was the younger group in the Junior Junior Filly Championship. The unanimous winner was a very beautiful and well-balanced bay filly named Victorya FHP (x Lettice FHP). She was bred and exhibited by Fazenda e Haras Paulista Ltda., and we learned later that she has been purchased by Greg and Jean Jacobs in the U.S. She was sired by Power World JQ (World Series x Noble Illusion JP), who was well represented with many fine offspring at the show. The reserve champion filly is a full sister to Magnum Chall HVP, Talyta HVP. She is very feminine and refined with a keen throatlatch and a showy attitude. Talyta HVP was bred by Haras Vila dos Pinheiros Ltda. and is owned by Strydom Arabian Stud from South Africa. Francesca and Tinus Strydom traveled to Brazil to see their new filly show and are pictured with her. Magnum Chall’s son Ultimate Chall HVP (x Nawaly HVP) was named unanimous champion in the Young Colt 18 to 27 Months Old Championship. He is a striking, bright chestnut stallion with an extreme head and a very smooth body. It is impressive that both Laman HVP and Ultimate Chall HVP were bred by Haras Vila dos Pinheiros Ltda. They are outstanding individuals. Bogart El Perseus (Perseus El Jamaal x TW Bey Fantasy), bred by Lenita Perroy was named Reserve Champion in this class. He is a tall, dark, handsome colt with a glamorous look and would merit high scores in type if the scoring system were used in Brazil. Flavia Maria Ramalho Torres owns the Champion and Reserve Champion colts — both gorgeous animals. It will be interesting to watch her breeding program evolve.

The Junior Junior Colt Championship was won by the beautiful Enzo colt Kenzo (x Chiara K). He has a beautiful eye and expression and presents himself with great style and personality. Kenzo is owned and bred by Ailton Jose Braga Domingues. Stig Maxximus (x Indirah K), another bay colt with a beautiful head, was named Reserve Champion in this group. He is sired by Legacy Of Fame and his owner/breeder is Carlos Roberto de Menezes. It should be noted that a third colt, Cadet Psy, sired by Padrons Psyche, had very similar judges scores and was edged out only by the call judge’s card. Marwan Al Shaqab was well represented in Brazil by his beautiful daughter Marwana HBV. She was another one of those individuals with both movement and beauty. Her owner is Rodrigo Lorenzi de Castro and she was bred by Luciano Cury of Fazenda e Haras Boa Vista. There were many beautiful halter classes with a great deal of excitement and loud entrances. Horns and a full percussion section accompanied some of the halter horses into the arena. The passion of the Brazilian breeders and spectators was evident throughout the show. In fact — sometimes “passion can get the better of the handlers, as was the case with two handlers who had a rather dramatic dispute in the warm-up ring! It has been over a decade since my last judging trip to Brazil. One of the major improvements is the performance division, especially the English and driving classes. There are some very nice horses, and good competition is elevating everyone’s game. Zeze Rodrigues has set a high standard for the western

division for many years. The western pleasure class for ladies was the largest performance class at the show and very beautiful. A highlight of the show for me was watching a blind teenage boy ride an Arabian horse. It was amazing and another credit to Zeze to be a facilitator to instill the trust between horse and rider. We judges asked the handlers to let the horses show their natural tailsets with no enhancement. Brazilian breeders and spectators applauded our request. They have been breeding animals for type and beauty, and high tail carriage is a birthright to the well-bred Arabian horse. The breeders and spectators are there to evaluate their own and each other’s horses for future breeding decisions and they realize that they must see a true picture. We were honored to visit the Haras Capim Fino on Monday afternoon after the show was over. Paulo Levy, one of the premier breeders of Brazil, was a gracious host. To future travelers to Brazil, I would say, prepare to see some of the most beautiful horses in the world; exciting horse shows; and be sure to visit the farms and walk among the broodmares. One more thing: I was warned about the Brazilian national drink, and I did not heed the warning. I am saying to you, fear the Caipirinha! ARABIAN HORSE WORLD b 63

November 13-14, 2008

ince 1898, the historic El Zahraa Stud has existed on the land of Kafr Farouk. In November, we enjoyed the essence of the magnificent Egyptian fall, which feels like spring, with a warming Egyptian sun. Entering the El Zahraa Stud, with its ancient trees that hug the paddocks, I was so excited waiting for the 15th National show followed by the 11th International Egyptian Championships. Although we had heard lots of rumors before this day, such as, “There will be no show this year,” “only a national show,” “The show will be in the stadium,” “different date,” the show was held on time and in the proper place. Egyptian breeders and all Arabian enthusiasts had been waiting for the show for a year, because this show is different. More than 350 horses were listed in the catalog this year for the National and International shows.

As for the International show, there were only two countries represented, Egypt and Saudi Arabia, but the horses competing were bred in 14 different countries: Belgium; Brazil; Egypt; Germany; the Netherlands; Italy; Ireland; Jordan; Kuwait; Poland; Qatar; Saudi Arabia; United Arab Emirates; and the United States. We were delighted to see so many of these great horses in one place. I’m sure the judges’ job was hard, but they did it extremely well — the points were so close, acceptable, and fair.

Greeting breeders and friends was so nice as we started asking about the horses, photographers took their positions, owners waited to see their fillies, and organizers were running everywhere trying to make their best effort. The organization of this show was much improved by the new EAO team. The new chairman of the EAO is Mr. Ahmed Hamza, owner of Hamdan A. Stud; Professor Dr. Mohamed Hashim El Deeb is the managing director of the EAO and the organizers were Dr. Nasr Marei, chairman of the organizing committee and the well-

known breeder of Al Badeia stud, and exclusive director-manager is Dr. Ahmed Hamed. When the fillies started to enter the arena, they were well prepared. Every now and then an extra cheer arose from a certain place in the stands, and we would turn to see the proud owners of a filly, wishing, hoping, angry, or happy. The horses made a good effort to move, but the arena was too small, and so slippery in the morning, just the reverse of what we saw in the national show that was held at the stadium last time. After class 3 finished, we had the lunch break, and then came back to hear the oriental music with the dancing horses as we waited for the EAO mares presentation. Here were such classic broodmares, with lots of history, all together in the same arena. We were able to see the different generations of these mares, the dams with their fillies and colts, and we learned a great deal about the Zahraa breeding program. First came the queen of the EAO, the lovely Tee (Adl x Bint Ibtisam) followed by her daughter Arouset Al Zahraa by Aaloub, then Azmeralda and her colt Zomorrod by Tagweed. The elegant mare

Everyone was expecting Moez Al Kaherah (Mirajh RCA x Moonira) to win — a very exotic colt that won last year, but instead the winner was Sohayl Al Kaherah (Ahmus x Muzdalifah). owned by the same person, Mr. Ahmed Amer, who said, “Well, I did expect Moez to win, but he is still young and he did not move like he usually does, but Sohayl moved so well — as if he was waiting to show himself.” After the colts came the EAO stallions presentation. It was beautiful, but chaotic, with little control in the arena. One stallion almost got loose, and another one was kicked. The organizer entered the arena trying to fix it, but it was a bit late; they were difficult to handle. The first one who entered just came to break our hearts, Rawah (Rashdan x Ramiah), a very nice stallion,

The stallion presentation was followed by the stallion class. Seeing Farouk Sakr (Shaheen x Desperados Fancy) was such a pleasure: he is a very exotic, well-balanced stallion, and he just has a special charisma. Everyone knew he must be a winner of titles. In the last class of this day we were really amazed to see Kenz Noor as a mature stallion, because the last time he was shown in Egypt was years ago. He looked so elegant. After him came the well-prepared Khaled Sakr, a stallion that was last seen in the showrings in 2005. He came second in the class after Kenz Noor and third was Halim. Imperial Madori was

well represented in this class as he is the sire of the three top-placing stallions. Instead of naming it Class 12, better name it Class Madori. The final fillies were standing, showing their beauty. There were ten of them, all lovely and close in points. When the results came we heard the naming of a bronze medal; the first time for us to experience its use in Egypt. I think it was a nice idea. Kamar Omar (Gamil Sakr x Ghalia Al Rayyan) took this medal, the Reserve Champion Filly was Anbar Noor (Ibn Arabia Sakr x

In my opinion it was an exceptional show, with a good number of high-quality horses. In one of the filly classes the first four fillies had the same marks, even movement and type. The judges had a hard job there, as the quality was so close. The organization was good, as there were so many entries, but there were not enough stalls, and they kept some of the horses in some kind of small wooden stalls, which is not fair I guess. It was a good idea to have the movement before the stand-up, which gave the horses better chances to show; also fewer plastic bags were used. It was a bad idea to show Rawah in the parade — the time was not right as he has laminitis. I competed in the show with my horses and was happy with the way they showed, but I hope we do better next time. Mrs. Hanan Serag El Dine, Ahmadeyat Al Hamd Stud, Egypt

In general it was a nice show, and it was so crowded, but still, this is what gives action. There were lots of visitors from all over the world, like Germany, the United States, and Saudi Arabia. I wish to see more and more like the last show in the stadium and I wish for more countries, in addition to Saudi Arabia, to attend with their horses. Maybe the show needs more promotion. What I liked most in this show was that the movement was presented before the standing pose — which really helped the horses. I also liked that rules were better stated this year. We knew how to present our horses and what to expect. Also, the mingling between the Egyptian breeders and the foreign breeders, especially after the show every day, and the open houses, helped so much for exchanging opinions and experiences.

74 b ARABIAN HORSE WORLD

The disadvantage of this show is the grounds. The grass is a bit slippery, especially in the morning. I wish to see an arena with good footings in El Zahraa. Mrs. Inge Friedmann, Friedmann Arabians, Germany

The show in Cairo was a great occurrence for us. We were very surprised about so many entries in the classes, and also by the high quality of all these horses — it was really outstanding. For me, I was very proud that my homebred horses were there, and F Shamaal was Senior Champion Stallion. His daughter was Junior Champion Filly; another of his daughters was a Junior Champion Reserve Filly; and an Al Lahab colt was a junior colt, so for me this show was a great festival. Mr. Mohamed Amin, Al Amin Stud, Egypt

This year’s show was overseen by breeders, as the manager and the chairman are both brzeeders, and I know next year it will be even better. About the horses, I just wish the ECAHO could make a rule that the horse that won in a show, can’t attend the next year, or maybe it exists already. It would give chances to others — frankly speaking, seeing the same horses winning over and over every year is not very interesting. Still I have to add that the winning horses deserve it. Mrs. Mila Khamis, Bebo Stud, Egypt

It was a good show, everyone knew what to show and what not to show, and where to show their horses. I liked the new organization. I entered this show with eight horses and I placed in six classes; a few of the six horses got very good points, much more than what I had expected, but still I have to always criticize myself. I was satisfied with my horses’ results. Egypt has a very good quality of horses and good new breeders are appearing.

M`shnm`k `mc Hmsdqm`shnm`k Bg`lohnmrghor Mr. Mostafa Omar, Ikhnatoon Stud, Egypt

It was a very nice show, much better quality, very nice organizing, the judging very nice, although I felt they were not so much into the straight Egyptian horses, as some of them I think, deserved more points. I did not enter my horses in this show, but several horses of my breeding were there. In my opinion Al Khalediah Farm is attending with world champions so I guess they should win — their horses are so well trained, and gorgeous. Mr. Nasr Al Moshtaha, El Shurek Stud, Egypt

The competition was really nice, and the organization was excellent. Dr. Nasr Marei did a lot of work, and it was so presentable with perfect judging. I think the arena would be better with extra light. I entered with several horses of my breeding and most of them placed. I’m so proud of this, and to come after a world champion is a great achievement for me. Mr. Omar Sakr, Sakr Arabians, Egypt

Definitely the organizers did a good job in this show, and I’m sure there will be many improvements in the coming years. For me the arena was too small for the horses to have a chance to show themselves or really trot. There was too much time lost between classes. A total of 374 horses was entered in the catalog, and sometimes not even half of the entries were in front of the judges in a given class. The music could have been a little more thrilling. Definitely showing Rawah in the EAO stallion parade was a bad idea. I did not have a chance to see any of the Sakrbred horses show, but since I bred them, I know them. Many people told me that Farouk Sakr was incredible; I know his type is overwhelming. But still we will always continue to seek better quality.

Mr. Sami Hasoon, Al Forsan Stud, Egypt

It was not a pretentious show at all. I liked the cohesion that was so obvious between foreign and Egyptian breeders. I saw some promising horses out there showing. There was a definite improvement in the quality of the horses, and I was happy not to see any objections about the judging from the breeders who did not win. It was civilized, and I think Mr. Ahmed Hamza, the new EAO chairman, with the help of the other breeders like Dr. Nasr Marei, made the show as if it is our show, with no boundaries. Responsibility was divided in a democratic way and everyone gave their input. We are known for having good hospitality, and believe me, this was evident throughout the show. For example, I was tired out from following my friend Mila Khamees, as she was always busy helping the visitors get from the airport to the show. And I think that the great winning of Al Khalediah Farm from Saudi Arabia was so educational for us, allowing the local breeders to understand what the show is all about. After all, it is not a court, it is a show, although in my opinion some horses did not have perfect conformation. They had the show quality, though, and they are well trained. This not only should inspire us, but also prove horses are not static creatures — they are dynamic (and Arabian horses are so dynamic). The only thing that I think was not so good was the time; the show was so long that some people missed parts of it. Mr. Osman Noor, Noor Stud, Egypt

The show was good, and I’m proud of my production through Kenz Noor, and others. I always knew he would be such a winner.

Mare, as usual, was the pretty lady who deserves it always — Mohga Sakr (Imperial Madori x SES Marah). And at the end were the stallions. The bronze medal went to Khaled Sakr (Imperial Madori x SES Marah); Reserve was Kenz Noor (Imperial Madori x Naksh El Koloub Noor); and the Champion Stallion was fabulous Farouk Sakr (Shaheen x Desperados Fancy). The 11th International Championships started on a very bright day with the fillies also divided into A and B classes. Fillies and mares were all amazing. Al Khalediah with some of their gorgeous horses, won five of the seven classes held that day. It was wonderful to see Victoria II HPS, Kharelle, Imperial Baalanah, and Ghayat Al Khalediah who was junior Champion Filly in the same

show last year. The fillies classes showed a lot of promising fillies that one day will produce some wonderful offspring if bred right. The next day was the last showing of the international stallions. It was obvious that the new stallions in Egypt are such good movers. I remember looking at an eight-month-old colt who was moving like a stallion! The stallions took our breath away — seeing them is such a thrill. The Khalediah horses won four out of six classes. Then came the judging of most classic head in the show; for stallions it was Kenz Noor (Imperial Madori x Naksh El Koloub Noor), and for mares, Imperial Baalanah (Imperial Baarez x Imperial Orrapha).

It was a successful show that leaves us all looking forward to the coming shows in Egypt, and all their surprises.

SEPTEMBER OCTOBER s PERTH WESTERN AUSTRALIA

Judge: Mieke Begg, Queensland, ridden, pure, and derivative events

The organizers of the Royal Show changed the judging days for all of the breeds at this year’s show. Mutterings were heard amongst the Arabian people, as for many years they have not had to participate in the Grand Parade but this year the parade was scheduled for every day (apart from the last day). We may not like it but we go to this show to let the public see our beautiful Arabians and this is one way that it can be done. This parade includes many different types of livestock from goats to cattle, horses (including the hacks and show jumpers), and sometimes vintage tractors. A magnificent team of four Clydesdale horses pulling a restored brewery wagon led the horse section of the parade. A team of four girls, who perform throughout Western Australia as Girls, Girls, Girls, WA, put on a display each day in the main arena. These four girls are a trick riding team and of the four horses, one is a purebred Arabian who is a former multi State In-Hand Champion (also broken to harness), two are unregistered horses of Arabian blood, and the other is a Quarter Horse. The team has only been performing together for about three months. Once again the Arabian Derivatives flew the flag for the breed in the Horses-in Action section with the Arabian Warmblood gelding Harmony Park Omen, owned and ridden by Janice Keelan, winning the ultimate turnout class — the Emily Pelloe award. Other Derivatives won championships and reserves in working hunter, pony hack, and novice pony hack. Many of our Derivatives are double and triple registered but at the Royal Show they are only allowed to compete in one breed registry section, which unfortunately keeps the numbers down in 82 b ARABIAN HORSE WORLD

the Arabian/Derivatives classes as most opt to show in a color class like pinto, buckskin, or palomino or even the riding pony classes. Some of these double- and triple-registered horses who did well were: Glenwood Park Exclamation, Supreme Champion Pinto; Brayside Heavenly Vision, Supreme Champion Buckskin; and Reserve Champion Pinto Mare/filly for the second year in a row was Cherokee Lodge Tsunami. The Arabian classes started with the yearling fillies and worked their way up to the geldings. In a first for the Royal Show, geldings were allowed to compete for the Supreme Champion awards, and in some of the breeds the geldings were combined with the stallions/colts. So far this combining of the males hasn’t occurred in the Arabian section, but possibly if numbers don’t increase, it will happen. Stallion/colt classes have been reduced to just two — three years and under and four and ARABIAN HORSE WORLD b 83

over, with no Junior Champion on offer. Gelding numbers far outweighed the entires, though. Mieke Begg from Queensland was the judge for both the ridden and the breed events, Pure and Derivative. Melanie Bray’s Nadalla Park Makmiadiva won Junior Champion Filly for the second year in succession. Senior Champion Mare was Halimas Amber Gem, owned by Cheryl Edwards and Lusia Abbott. Neither of these females had any competition in their age class but proved they were worthy winners by taking out their respective championships. The long-striding Halimas Amber Gem became Supreme Champion, capping off a wonderful show year for her. Relative newcomers to the Arabian world Sarah and Sophie Lynch showed their Tawarris Pure Indulgence to win the large senior gelding class. Only one mare was shown under saddle, with no stallions coming forward. For some reason Lucy Leeder’s mount Aranita Hayyday was entered under his EFA name of Royal Aslan in the ridden gelding class; no one was sure how this got past the scrutineers. Redline Shooting Star became Supreme Champion Derivative. This partbred Arabian colt is a many times Supreme Champion of all breeds and is always presented to perfection by his owner/breeder Keralyn Frazer. The Arabian riding ponies are still the largest in numbers of Derivatives being shown here, with six out of the eight Champions and Reserves on offer for the Derivatives being won by Arabian riding ponies. 84 b ARABIAN HORSE WORLD

have to admit that I wasn’t particularly excited about my trip to Paris (at least as far as the show classes were concerned!), and I know I was one of many who were more convinced than ever before that we knew who most of the winners would be, and who three, if not all, of the titles were going to. But happily we were in for some big surprises, tears and tantrums, and far more passion and drama than we had been expecting. Gazal Al Shaqab. Sire of World Champion Senior Female and World Champion Senior Male (and both had already been crowned World Champion in previous years), and grandsire of World Champion and Reserve World Champion Junior Female and Junior Male! ry this: go into a room, reach out your hand and see how much air you can capture. Chances are you will come up empty-handed, unless you happened to be in Paris at the Salon du Cheval at this year’s World’s Championships for Arabian horses. Had you been there you would understand. The air, the atmosphere, the energy was so heavy you could capture it, cut it, feel it, and be moved by it. At times you could hardly breathe. There was so much to Paris this year — the unexpected, 88 b ARABIAN HORSE WORLD

the expected. Truly, by Day One, who knew what was going to happen? There were fewer horses, but such depth, such credentials, and so many important horses with so much at stake. This is my 27th Paris, and I have never come close to experiencing anything like it.

My beloved Marwan was named World Champion, but was not without enormous drama. Great horses were involved in the process; nothing was assured. But the best for me was that whatever the outcome was to be, I was still leading Marwan, who is

the very embodiment of a “breeding horse.” He is so majestic and so beautiful, and as his life has unfolded, he has made an impact on the Arabian breed as few have. So as emotionally drained as I was by week’s end, the title mattered less to me than the fact that Marwan was safe and happy. Ribbons are good, Marwan is better.

Prior to the award of the World Champion stallion title, the award is given to the best sire of the show. Marwan was invited in to join his get, the World Champion and Reserve World Champion Colt and

the World Champion and Reserve World Champion Filly, to claim the title as the best sire at the 2008 World Championships. What more significant honor can be bestowed on a stallion? The Marwan son QR Marc, unquestionably one of the “glamour horses” of our time, was the Reserve Champion Colt. He will have an impact. The Marwan son Baanderos, acclaimed around the world, was named Champion, and he too is a deserving champion. The Marwan daughter Abha Palma, a representative of a program

phenomenal to describe this stallion’s achievements, and surely no one could disagree. And judging by the youngsters yet to make their appearance in the showring, this dynasty’s successes will go on and on. Gazal Al Shaqab, we salute you. The judging in Paris is unique, in that each of the four sections to be judged (Junior Female and Senior Female on Friday, Junior Male and Senior Male on Saturday), is further divided into two by age and judged on the points system. The top five from each of these two subdivisions come forward to make the top ten on Sunday, but are then judged using the comparative system. This catches some spectators out, as a horse that showed its socks off in its class to get top marks on Friday/Saturday, may well not feature at the top on Sunday if, for example, it does not show so well in the final. Our judges were Dr. Gianmarco Aragno, Italy; Mrs. Deirdre Hyde, UAE/UK; Dr. Nasr Marei, Egypt; Mr. Richard Pihlström, France; Mr. Willi Poth, Germany; Mrs. Renata Schibler, Switzerland; and Mrs. Marianne Tengstedt, Denmark; with five judging each class and all seven judging the final on Sunday. The Junior Fillies started the show on Friday morning, with nine present in the first qualifying section and 12 in

the second. Paul Gheysens’ stunning black filly Magnums Madonna (Magnum Psyche x Tai Bey Britney), champion at the All Nations Cup earlier in the year, easily won her class from Mystica Arabians’ Princess Of Marwan (Marwan Al Shaqab x Amety B), perhaps less exotic than the winner, but with superb structure. This filly was bred in the U.S. by Roger and Stephanie McMahon. Taking the next places were two chestnut fillies by the WH Justice son Ajman Moniscione, similar in quality and type, Djoonam OS being out of the multi Champion Kubinec daughter Khaleifa and Baila de Djoon out of a ZT Shakfantasy daughter. Both were bred by Osterhof Stud and are now owned by the Albidayer Stud, UAE. Fifth, and therefore the last to qualify in this class, was the more ethereal, white FT Shaella, by the relatively unknown Ansata Sinan son, Shael Dream Desert, also the sire of Shannan El Madan, a colt that featured very well in his section. These two very pretty youngsters made quite an impact — in fact, so much so that their sire now has joined the other illustrious horses belonging to Paul Gheysens in Belgium. The second section of Junior Females was headed by Abha Palma (Marwan Al Shaqab x Abha Gazali), owned by Al Mohamadia Stud and bred by Marieta Salas, whose breeding program is on fire at the moment. by storm with her tremendous movement and fabulous show attitude, as well as giving one of those great poses that the Marwan get, with their superb neck-set and stretch, achieve so easily. Second was the beautiful, ultrafeminine Om El Bernadette (Om El Shahmaan x Om El Benedict) for Al Khalediah Farm, softer in expression, but less dynamic than the victor. Multi champion Pandoraah showed well as always, but had to be content with third, with two Ekstern daughters, Psyche Victoria and Altamira making up the final qualifiers, Psyche Victoria beating her half sister on type and head and neck, while Altamira gained the higher movement and leg marks. The two Senior Female classes that followed, had disappointingly low numbers entered, with seven forward in the first section and only five in the next. But then, what quality! Janow’s unbelievable, seemingly unbeatable Pianissima (Gazal Al Shaqab x Pianosa) entered the ring to deservedly rapturous applause, and no matter that there were other stunning mares in this class, it was hers to take, and as ever, we were unable to tear our eyes away from this exquisite, hair-tingling, goose-pimpling mare. It is an honor every time to see Pianissima in the showring (and what a groupie I am — I even kissed her in her stable later, poor thing!). Janow’s girl scored 94 points, gaining a ‘mere’ 9 x 20 along the way. The Marwan daughter Abha Myra took the next spot for Al Shaqab Stud; this mare

really can outpose any other, with a tremendous neck and topline. Third was yet another from the Gazal dynasty, this time owned and bred by Michalow, the lovely Pistoria, pipped by half a point. Fourth was a particular favorite of mine, the fabulous Venetzia (Versace x Giavanna), who really took the ring by storm and showed the best I’ve ever seen her. I was a little surprised to see this gorgeous mare down in this spot. The lovely grey Lumiar Bint Balzac made the final qualifying position. The next section of Senior Females had five lovely white mares entered, with the Dubai Arabian Stud’s gorgeous and very feminine Martinique (Ansata Sinan x Marratxi), bred by Suzanne Reiter, Germany, giving one of her fun, frothy shows to easily take the class, with Michalow’s elegant Emesa (Laheeb x Etopka) next, followed by MA Scarlet, and the privately owned mare from Russia, Nerl, shown by crowd (and horse) favorite Jan Calis, with Bialka’s big-moving Emika taking fifth spot. Saturday is for the lads. Winner of the first section of Juniors was the lovely Brazilian-bred Shannan El Madan (out of Perla K), owned by the Al Mohamadia Stud. This colt showed he is not just a pretty face, moving well too, to take the class from Italian-owned and -bred European Champion Ali Moniscione (Psytadel x Alianna Moniscione), equal on type and head and neck marks, but not moving so well on this occasion. The smart Gazal son Roe Lateef also showed well to take third, over the Egyptian MVA Colour Me Cool, who gained the highest movement marks of the class. Orion OS (Om El Bahreyn x Vetla), took fifth spot, seeming a little overwhelmed by the occasion, but with his super structure gaining enough points to take the final place for Sunday.

The next class gave us the exciting battle of the Marwan sons, Al Khalediah’s grey seasoned campaigner Baanderos (out of HB Bessolea) and the latest, and arguably most famous top gun, QR Marc (out of Swete Dreams), bred in the U.S. by the Doyles and another belonging to Paul Gheysens. These two are quite different in type, although both carry the Marwan stamp, oozing showmanship and quality. Baanderos won on this occasion, although surprisingly he was a whole four marks clear, belying the closeness in quality of these two colts. Indeed, at the Al Khalediah Show in January the boys had tied for first place, with QR Marc pipping Baanderos on type. Baanderos is as capable as any of the Marwan get of giving that superpose, the grey really using his neck and body to show himself to his best advantage, and here he gained points over the prettier, but less stretchy QR Marc. Third was Kabsztad, son of the fabulous Kwestura — this horse moves for fun and

really eats up the ground in a huge, round trot, using his entire body and neck, and surely deserving higher marks for movement than he was given. The tall, elegant and very pretty Don Giovanni took fourth spot, with the huge, powerful showman Lord Bey Shah taking fifth. The first section of senior males had seven come forward, including previous World Champion Nijem Ibn Eternity VI (Eternity Ibn Navarrone x Naravna), bred by M. Smits in Belgium and owned by Al Khalediah Stud, who won the class easily and gained the highest points for type, head and neck, and movement, including several 20s. Polish boys took second and third slots, Poganin (Laheeb x Pohulanka) for Janow just pipping Michalow’s Esparto (Ekstern x Ekspozycja) with his greater movement marks. The striking MCA Magnum Gold

took fourth; a tall, impressive stallion, he tied with the Imperial Baarez son Imperial Baareg, but knocked Baareg down to fifth by virtue of higher movement marks, as they both tied on type. Last, and by far the most dramatic class of the day, was the second section of Senior Males. I think many had assumed that winning would be a walk in the park for the undefeated Marwan Al Shaqab, with El Farida Stud’s Imperial Baarez, bred by the Imperial Egyptian Stud, expected to be his bridesmaid. However! What dramas were about to unfold! Marwan looked superb and gained a total score of 466.5, including five 20s, which normally one would be thrilled with. However, when the marks were revealed, for a moment there was silence amongst the spectators, as they realized that this score was beatable! Particularly for Marwan’s connections, where feelings were running high! The whole atmosphere around the arena changed as the crowd realized that the unthinkable could happen. I went to the collecting ring, and there was an excited buzz around Baarez. He looked as good as he’s ever looked, and it was as if he knew his chance had come to make his own little piece of history, and he rose to the occasion, strutting his stuff and prancing around the collecting ring, waiting his chance to shine. Finally it was Baarez’s turn to come into the arena, and he came in as if he owned it. Now the crowd was really excited — this battle of the giants had split them into two sections, with half wanting the snow-white pretender to take the class and the other half still in disbelief that the great Marwan’s crown could be under threat. Support for Baarez became louder and louder as he stood up for the judges, and I have to say it really was great fun. After what seemed like an age, Baarez’s marks came up. One point up on Marwan for type; one and a half more for head and neck. Three points down on Marwan for body, half a point up on legs, so it was now a tie and we all waited with bated breath for the marks given for movement. A roar of approval drowned out the Marwan supporters’ roar Top left: Junior Champion Colt: Baanderos (Marwan Al Shaqab x HB Bessolea),owned by Al Khalediah Stables, HRH Prince Khaled bin Sultan Al Saud, Saudi Arabia. of anguish as Baarez was announced the winner, by virtue of an extra point for movement. Showing! We were lovin’ it! Michalow’s Grafik was third, always the showman Emin Pacha de Lam was fourth, and the super white former World Champion Khidar fifth in this most exciting class. As one would expect, Paris does Championship day very well. The lighting, the brass band, the bright, colorful arena and lots of pizzazz and glamour all helping to enliven the atmosphere. Before each champion is announced, the lights are dimmed, there is a hush amongst the spectators, and gradually we begin to hear a heartbeat over the loudspeakers, which gets louder and louder and faster and faster until — yay! The champion is announced! Fabulous! The day started with the Junior Fillies, and there were no certainties here: in fact, between the seven judges eight different horses were put forward for champion or reserve. But it was the two Marwan fillies that took the top honors, the bay Abha Palma beating her half sister Princess Of Marwan — both fillies receiving two champion votes, but Abha Palma winning the Champion’s crown by virtue of also getting a Reserve vote. In contrast, Senior Female Champion was as much a certainty as one could get, unanimous of course for Pianissima, with Venetzia taking the Reserve from Martinique and Abha Myra. Only two colts featured on the judges’ results for champion and reserve: again, both by Marwan, with Baanderos taking top honors over QR Marc, a very, very close call, I’m sure, between these two colts, and indeed emotions seemed to be running particularly high at the

presentation! The grey Shannan El Madan was pulled in below them, and it was interesting to note that all three colts have Ali Jamaal on the dam’s side. And on to the most anticipated championship of all: Senior Male. By now the atmosphere in the hall was electric — and noisy! I haven’t known it to be like this at any other show before, starting with the exuberant Italians and Baarez’s supporters chanting “Paulo! Paulo!” for Baarez’s handler, Paulo Capecci, and being picked up equally loudly by Marwan’s connections and fans! It was like a gladiator’s arena, with the two sides competing for supremacy. And of course, we were made to wait an age for the final announcement, whilst presentations were made and thanks given (including Pianissima’s award for La plus belle tête — after all, she did score a perfect 20 from every judge! And

Right: Bronze Junior Champion Filly FT Shaella (Shael Dream Desert x Soul Pretty), owned by Al Mohamadia Stud, HH Prince Abdullah bin Fahad Al Saud, Saudi Arabia.

Marwan’s award for sire of the show, no surprises there). Eventually, after being built up to a frenzy of suspense, the lights dimmed, the heartbeat started … and a roar went up as Marwan Al Shaqab received his third World Championship title and Imperial Baarez took Reserve. The carnival-like atmosphere was added to when Michael Byatt jumped onto Marwan’s back (a very brave move when you consider the copious amounts of show sheen that had been used), and rode him around the now crowded arena. Not to be outdone, Paulo then jumped onto Imperial Baarez! And what a great way to end this fabulous show — which had exceeded our expectations — with some fun! Something that has been much missed in the show scene of late, and yet something that perhaps we could all do with a little more of these days.
