Ebers Papyrus, Ancient Egyptian medicine. First part of the Ebers Papyrus, written in Egypt in about 1570 BC. It is the oldest preserved medical document, containing the most complete description of Egyptian medicine known. When unrolled, it measures 20 metres by 30 centimetres and has 110 pages written in hieratic script. Its contents include over 700 formulas for making traditional remedies. There are chapters on medical specialities such as dentistry, intestinal disease, eye and skin disorders, and surgery. Many specific disorders like diabetes and arthritis are described. The papyrus was found in Thebes in 1862 by Georg Moritz Ebers. It is now in the library of the University of Leipzig, Germany.
