Citizen Science in the Rio Doce Basin Project
About the Project
On June 28, 2019, UNESCO in Brazil and the Renova Foundation signed a Technical Cooperation Agreement for promoting sustainable development in the Rio Doce Basin regions affected by the dam incident in the area, strengthening the institutional capacity and implementing Renova Foundation actions, which resulted in the creation of the Citizen Science Project in the Doce River Basin.
What is Citizen Science?
Citizen Science is the participation of amateurs, volunteers and enthusiasts in scientific projects. Based on this statement, we seek to involve citizens so that they can effectively participate in the definition of problems and scientific analysis from a “non-scientist” or “amateur” perspective as a subject capable of taking part in producing scientific knowledge, enjoying the right to full access and sharing of this knowledge.
The Project's Goal
The Citizen Science Project in the Rio Doce Basin aims to instigate citizen science through education and communication activities, involving social participation in monitoring activities for both terrestrial and aquatic biodiversity in the Rio Doce Basin. Thus, the project has two lines of action:
- water monitoring
- biodiversity monitoring
Focusing on young people living by the borders of the Rio Doce Basin, the project prioritises its work with the school communities, emphasising four categories of educational institutions: primary education schools, secondary education schools, technical schools, and universities.
Project Programs:
Primary education children in schools around the Parque Estadual de Sete Salões (IEF)
Secondary education students - Linhares, Bartouvino Costa, and Nossa Senhora da Conceição (Espírito Santo)
Technical education students in the Colatina (Espírito Santo) environmental school
University students from UNIVALE in Governador Valadares (Minas Gerais)
