Kiribati is a group of 32 coral atolls and one raised coral island, Banaba, in the central Pacific Ocean, with three time zones.
A former British protectorate and colony, known as the Gilbert Islands. Kiribati has over 119,000 inhabitants, more than half of whom live on Tarawa, an atoll just north of the Equator.
