More than vessel tracking: From Trade Flows to Banned Vessels to Vessel Checks

I'm just sitting in an ICE train on my way back home from Munich where I ran a demo of Refinitiv #Shipping / #Freight analysis content in @Refinitiv Eikon.

For the demo I have chosen the recent #crude #oil freight rate spike as a sample case. That had taken place early October after a ban on vessels that had carried oil from #Venezuela during the last 12 month. In order to identify affected vessels I'm taking these steps:

  • with our Oil Trade Flows app I identified more than 300 vessels that had laden oil from Venezuela

  • as I want to look at vessels but not at voyages I export the trade flows result to Excel in order to remove duplicates
  • the list includes instrument codes, RICs, or IMO as identifiers - from here I can chose whether to search vessel properties and status in #Excel using asset search or...
  • ... putting the RICs into an Eikon Monitor APP which I did as a next step
  • I do open Interactive Map in Eikon and now link from the Monitor to the MAP - I can see all involved vessels at a glance or click one of the entries in order to see an indivual vessels data in the map

  • from the indivudual vessel I can bring up it's 180 day track and or it's direction or a detailed overview of that asset
  • BTW: more than 200 vessel characteristics are now available in Eikon for Excel, Monitor app and Eikon API - view all at a glance using the Data Item Browser, DIB, in Eikon. Be aware: all of the data I'm talking about also can be accessed via Eikon Desktop API family using #Python or #R

World-Check Vessel-Check

For another demo I went beyond what Eikon delivers. I asked my colleagues from Refinitiv Governance Risk and Compliance if we can look up my vessel list if any of these are directly affected by any type of sanctions.

They uploaded the vessel list to World-Check Vessel-Check using IMO and vessel name - and yes we found some that where affected. In a further step you can look up the UBO - Ultimate Beneficial Owner of a vessel - certainly worth a seperate post.

For the first part of the above workflow I have created an Eikon Layout I can share with you. If you want to see a demo of Refinitiv Commodities Research & Forecast content please contact me via LinkeIn.

See you - Patrick

I like the Post very much. However it is a sad world we live in, that this has to be done. Patrick Schwarz
