Q: How often do you eat out?

A: Maximum three times a month.

Q: What are your favorite neighborhood places?

A: I live in Delaware, which prides itself on locally owned restaurants. My favorite is Amato’s (6 S. Sandusky St.; also in Mount Vernon); they’re a wood-fired pizza place, but they also have excellent Italian food, including spaghetti. It’s like a party in your mouth. Their red sauce is second to none, and their meatball is also very phenomenal. Also, their ingredients are very good.

Q: What’s your favorite place for breakfast?

A: The best breakfast place that I know of is Hamburger Inn (16 N. Sandusky St.) in Delaware. And it is very much a counter-type of restaurant, so it has not changed with the times, which is something I actually like. (It's) probably a little greasier than health experts would think is acceptable, but that’s why you go there. It’s very good. They are known for their cinnamon rolls. I’m not a big fan of sugary breads for breakfast, but people do love their cinnamon rolls. I had one once and it was rich and good. I’m not into rich and good.

Q: If you have friends visit from out of town, where do you take them?

A: Maybe something like Schmidt’s (Sausage Haus und Restaurant, 240 E. Kossuth St.), which is in German Village. It’s supposed to be very German, passed down from generation to generation. They take pride in that. 

Q: Is there a hidden gem that you think more people should know about?

A: There’s a place called Gabby’s (Place, 3120 Olentangy River Road, Delaware) that has awesome stromboli, and you’d have to know about it to end up there. It’s off the beaten path to get there; (it's in) an old house that has a restaurant in it, with like four tables. Just try the stromboli; I can’t speak for anything else they have. And it’s right near a bar, and there’ll be like three people there who have probably been there longer than they should have been.
