Godefroid Devreese

Godefroid Devreese is a Belgian sculptor and medalist, born in Kortrijk in 1861 and died in Brussels in 1941.

After having started his training at the Academy of Kortrijk, Godefroid Devreese moved to Brussels and continued his training there at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts from 1881 to 1886, having as teachers the sculptors Eugène Simonis and Charles Van der Stappen.

In 1884, he moved to Schaerbeek, which he did not leave until 1939. He lived there successively at no 134 boulevard Lambermont, no 7 rue Quinaux, no 71 rue des Ailes and no 27 avenue Huart Hamoir.

He traveled a lot in England, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands and Paris. He became renowned as a sculptor and as a medalist and as such participated in numerous exhibitions. His career has been rewarded with numerous awards and honors.

Considered in Belgium as an innovator in the art of the medal, he created more than 400 of them. He worked for the Royal Mint of Belgium.
