A New Jersey animal shelter is inviting cat lovers to name a feral feline after an ex for Valentine’s Day — and then have it spayed or neutered.
“Neuter your ex for Valentine’s Day,” the Homeward Bound Pet Adoption Center in Gloucester Township, New Jersey, announced in a hissterical promotion.
The cost for clawing back at the former romantic partners is $50.
“Because some things shouldn’t breed,” the center said on Instagram in a purrrfect slogan for the drive.
“The cat will then be spayed or neutered before being released back to their colony as part of our trap-neuter-return (TNR) program,” it said.
“TNR is a vital component of feral cat population control as it breaks the breeding cycle and stops the birth of unwanted cats in our community,” the South Jersey facility continued.
“Your donation ensures we can offer spay/neuter surgery at a reduced cost for community cats and their caregivers in need,” it added.
Eric Schwartz, Homeward Bound’s director of development, said more than 600 cats were fixed and released through the program in 2023.
People interested in shaming their exes for a good cause may fill out a donation form and select the “in honor” option to complete the dastardly dedication.
Schwartz told the Philadelphia Inquirer that Homeward Bound plans to provide every donor who requests one with a photo of the fixed cats named after their exes.
There’s also an option to let a person know that you donated.
“One woman sent the names of her three ex-husbands and wrote, ‘I should’ve learned after the first one,’” Schwartz told the oulet.
So far, the campaign has raised over $2,000, which will cover about 40 feline spayings and neuterings, he said.
“When you say ‘let’s neuter an ex,’ everybody has the name of a person pop into their head,” Schwartz added. “We’re happy to bring some closure while doing something important.”
Homeward Bound is not the first animal shelter to use Valentine’s Day for fundraising and allowing those unlucky in love to vent.
The San Antonio Zoo has said that in exchange for a donation, it would name a cockroach after your ex – and feed it to an animal, according to CNN.
In 2021, the Lexington Humane Society in Kentucky announced that for $10, people could have names of their choice written inside a litter box for cats to do their business on.
For $5, a cat at the Rhode Island SPCA also will poop on your ex’s name.
