Gigi Hadid is many things: supermodel, entrepreneur and mother are just a few that initially come to mind. The 27-year-old graces the cover of Elle magazine’s March 2023 issue, and she chatted with the publication about her role as both a mom and creative director of her clothing brand, Guest in Residence.

Hadid gave birth to her daughter, Khai, whom she shares with ex-partner Zayn Malik, in September 2020.

“I got pregnant and I really started to think about what I wanted after, when the world opened back up. It kept coming back to just a more stabilized schedule where I’m not in a different country every week,” she told the publication of her career shift with the knitwear brand. “This is very stabilizing. I have an office that I come to. I know everyone here. I don’t have to look a certain way to show up. It’s a different experience for me, and it was the right time because I was ready for that.”

Hadid also shared that her daughter “sees me in every state and way” and that she continues to learn as she experiences life with Khai.

“Having a daughter, although it shifted my life to make me really want to feel more settled, has also really made me appreciate the chaos as well,” she said. “Being at shows and shoots and just being in the city again; being around friends [after] becoming a mom, with everyone also coming out of COVID—I have an appreciation for both sides of it.”

Hadid spoke to the publication last fall about how her creative process for Guest in Residence was influenced by her experience as a mother.

“Being a mom, you start to think about what the trends and style might be as your child grows up, and what I hope to pass down to her. With that in mind, I think my intention with Guest in Residence is to be able to create pieces that are fun in their colorways but classic enough that they can transcend many generations and can be passed down,” she said.
