Mazda is cold-weather testing its RX-8 Hydrogen RE, using the same model now available in Japan for commercial lease (though they did swap in a new set of tires). The tests of the hydrogen rotary-engine vehicle came at the request of the Hokkaido Regional Development Bureau (HRDB) and coincided with the Environment and Transport Symposium on Hydrogen Energy just held there — in fact, some attendees got to go for a spin. According to the Mazda release, "The HRDB is conducting feasibility studies into the uses of hydrogen in snowy climates" — a historical hurdle for fuel cell vehicles.
