Rough-haired biennial with one or several stems.

It was once used to treat snake bites, hence the name ‘Viper’s Bugloss’.

Grassy waste areas, on rock face.

Flowers

The flowers range from purplish-red to bright blue in a branched spike. Stamens are red and protruding.

Leaves

Lanceolate leaf is lance-shaped: long and widest in the middle. Rosette: long, wider in the middle, pointed serrated leaves covered in spiny, bristly white hairs.

Fruits Seeds

Nut: small, contains the fruit and seed of the plant; does not open to release its seeds.

Medical

Seeds: contain gamma linolenic acid (omega 6), as do Borage and Evening Primrose.
