Katrina Kaif knows beauty indubitably—just look at Kay Beauty. But what's less apparent is her approach to wellness. In a recent interview with Vogue at the weekender beauty and lifestyle festival Nykaaland, the actor reaffirmed her commitment to liquid probiotics, while also swearing by ginger water for starting her day. “The first thing I have after waking up is a liquid probiotic. After that, I boil some freshly grated ginger in water for 10 minutes and have at least three glasses of that. Then I do my yoga, have breakfast, and get on with my day,” she shared.

The star’s choice of starting her day with a liquid probiotic is an easy one to emulate, believes Karishma Chawla, a Mumbai-based nutritionist and lifestyle educator. “The idea of taking a probiotic early in the morning is to ensure a decent interval before a meal so that it can be absorbed better. It helps with the detoxification of the body, better bowel movement as well as regulating the metabolism for weight management,” she explains, while affirming that liquid alternatives can offer better absorption than probiotic supplements and pills. “Keffir can be easily made at home once you procure the necessary grains and coconut water, while kombucha is a great candidate as well for starting the day,” she adds.

Chawla believes that Kaif’s choice of having boiled ginger water in the morning aligns with a recent rise in interest in digestive bitters—foods that trigger the production of more saliva to stimulate the digestive system before having the first meal of the day. “As an anti-inflammatory agent, ginger eases the transit time of food and aids in the bowel movement process, thereby keeping constipation at bay,” she elaborates.

If you are looking at inviting its benefits into your digestive routine, Chawla recommends brewing your own herbal tea with grated ginger, black pepper and a dash of honey for better taste. “When had on an empty stomach in the morning, it can enhance digestion throughout the day,” she signs off.
