Carla Bruni, the Italian-French model and singer, has disclosed that she was diagnosed with breast cancer and has called on women to seek regular screenings.

In a video posted on Instagram to mark Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Bruni, 55, who is married to the former French president Nicolas Sarkozy, used sign cards to reveal that she was diagnosed with the disease four years ago.

“I’m not writing this post to give you the details of my health. That’s repugnant to me and I hesitated for a long time before talking about this,” she said. “I’m posting this today to deliver a message. Do your mammograms. Your lives depend on it.”

“I was lucky . . . My cancer was not yet aggressive,” she said, adding
