Paolo Di Canio to lift the lid on explosive Celtic career at exclusive Glasgow bash

PAOLO DI CANIO will lift the lid on his explosive season with Celtic at an exclusive bash in Glasgow later this year.

Ex-AC Milan and Lazio striker Di Canio was worshipped by Hoops fans during his solitary year in Scottish football.

Although Rangers claimed Nine-in-a-Row, the fiery Italian - who infamously threatened to break Ian Ferguson's leg in the aftermath of a decisive Old Firm defeat - picked up the Player of the Year award.

But Di Canio quit the club in 1997 after an explosive bust-up with then owner Fergus McCann.

Now, supporters will get the chance to hear all about his controversial 12 months at Parkhead at a special Q&A event in September.

The night will be hosted at the Hilton Hotel in Glasgow on Friday September 6 - with tickets starting at £33.

Punters can also snap up VIP briefs from £75 where they will get the chance to meet and greet the maverick maestro.

Details on the event website say: "Paolo Di Canio is one of football’s great characters.

"The fiery Italian played with a passion that was always threatening to overspill into chaos. It helped make him the fantastic player he was. Always playing on the edge.
"Celtic fans know this all too well. Paolo signed for Celtic in 1996 and in a season dogged by controversy he scored 15 goals and was crowned the SPFA Player of the Year!

"Join us on Friday 6th September at the Hilton Hotel in Glasgow where Paolo will be appearing for a special intimate event.

"Di Canio will be entertaining us on stage recalling the eventful highs and lows of his time at Celtic and sharing his personal stories .
"Paolo’s character is known and loved by many and this is a chance to get up close and personal with him. Don’t miss this opportunity to be a part of a fantastic night for any Celtic fan!"

While the ex-West Ham and Sheffield Wednesday lit up the British game, his supposed political ideals caused problems.

Di Canio caused an outcry in 2005 when he gave a Nazi-style straight armed-salute to the notoriously thuggish Ultras who follow Rome side Lazio.

Years later the 50-year-old was axed as a pundit on Sky Sport Italia after showing his Fascist 'Dux' tattoo on air.

But in an interview given in the aftermath of his sacking, Di Canio insisted he's not a racist and said he regretted making his "Roman" salute during the Rome derby.

He said: “It's the thing I most regret in my career.

"It was a sporting arena - it's stupid to make a political gesture that perhaps can be shared by some spectators and and embitter many others.

"I should never have done that. Sport must stay out of certain things.

"I do not have this thing of racism inside me, it does not belong to me, I would like to shout this out loud."
