Every hope of return to goalkeeping action

The Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini has undergone an operation to realign his damaged pelvis and both of his fractured wrists and it is hoped that the procedures will enable him to play again following his motorbike accident yesterday.

The 36-year-old Italian fractured both wrists and injured his pelvis after crashing his motorbike in Walthamstow in north-east London.

Tottenham's head of medical services, Wayne Diesel, said on the club website: "We have leading specialists looking after Carlo and, once surgery is complete and his recovery is under way, we will have a clearer idea of how many weeks he will be out for."

Tottenham's manager, Harry Redknapp, added: "We are all sorry to hear about what has happened to Carlo. We are just relieved that the injuries that he sustained in the accident weren't more serious. Everyone at the club sends their best wishes and we hope that he recovers soon."

Cudicini arrived at White Hart Lane last January on a free transfer after a decade at Chelsea. He made his name at Stamford Bridge, joining Chelsea from Castel Di Sangro in 1999, initially on loan before signing a permanent deal.

He was first choice for four seasons at Stamford Bridge before the arrival of Petr Cech but the Italian has made only eight appearances this season and his current contract expires next summer.
