The Battle of Enfarinats

In a tradition that dates back more than 200 years, the town of Ibi, Spain, celebrates the festival of Els Enfarinats on December 28th with a mock battle taking place outside the town hall. Participants attack each other with eggs, flour, firecrackers, fire extinguishers, and more. The annual battle involves an a group of married men called “Els Enfarinats,” who stage a coup, taking over the town, declaring and enforcing ridiculous new laws—and “La Oposicio,” another group who try to restore order. At the end of the day, any money collected in fines by “Els Enfarinats” is donated to charity.
