Who is Damien Hirst?

Damien Hirst is one of the Young British Artists known for Conceptual and Installation art. He dominated the art scene in the UK during the 90s. His subject matter centered around death, and he became famous for his series of dead animals immersed in formaldehyde displayed in glass cases.

Hirst studied art at the Goldsmith's College at the university of London. During his studies he organized his 1st exhibition entitled "Freeze" in 1988 featuring the works of his fellow students : Fiona Rae, Sarah Lucas and others as well as his own. They were known for using unique material in their artwork and defining art concepts. Hirst was interested in shaking up the art industry by his unique perception of death. This was enough to catch the eye of Charles Saatchi an advertising titan and art collector who gave a Hirst the financial support he needed to start his career.

From his frist solo exhibition in 1991 at the Woodstock Street Gallery in London, he was known for not following the rules and as being provocateur  Hirst’s later work included paintings made by spin machines, enlarged ashtrays filled with cigarette butts, monumental anatomical models of the human torso, medicine cabinets filled with pharmaceuticals, other curiosity cabinets filled with found objects, and a diamond-studded platinum-cast human skull entitled For the Love of God, probably the most expensive work of art ever made.
