Millions of years ago the sea of Thetis covered this area of the province of Cuenca, now part of the the Serranía of Cuenca Natural Park. When the sea retreated, the seabed was left at the mercy of the elements, which over the years have created a unique landscape of great beauty. The Enchanted City of Cuenca is located in the municipality of Valdecabras. It was declared a Natural Site of National Interest on 11 June 1929 and today we can visit it thanks to a simple but very entertaining hiking route that runs through its main corners.
As we have already mentioned, the Enchanted City is located in the heart of the Serranía of Cuenca Natural Park, specifically in the municipality of Valdecabras, just 30 kilometres from the city of Cuenca. Access to this natural spot is via the CM-2104 road, and it is on this road that the complex, which houses the car park and visitor centre, is located.
Visits to the Enchanted City of Cuenca are subject to a timetable throughout the year. This timetable varies depending on the time of year, with the opening time always being 10:00. The closing time varies between 18:00 in the winter months and 21:00 in the summer months. In any case, the last visit always begins 1h 30min before closing time.
Ticket prices to visit the Enchanted City of Cuenca vary from €5 for adults to €4 for children between 8 and 12 years old. You can also book a guided tour for €6 per person. Children under 7 years old have free admission. Please note that ticket sales end 5 minutes before the last visit of the day.
The circular route through this karst landscape begins next to the visitor centre of the Enchanted City (0h 00min), where we buy the corresponding entrance ticket. The entire route is perfectly signposted, the outward route with turquoise markings and the return route with pink markings. Although in a first stretch both coincide until you reach the first of the significant points of the visit, the Tormo Alto. It is an icon of this natural spot that surprises us with its silhouette and height. We continue the route, guided only by the turquoise markings, until we reach another of the spots we will discover, The Boats. As we can already imagine, the name of these formations describes their unique shape.
A shape that is due to the peculiar characteristics of the composition of the rocks, with the presence of gypsum and limestone that resist the elements differently, resulting in these curious formations.
The route continues to discover The Dog among the pines, taking us to the Roman Bridge, presenting us with the perfect portrait of the Face of Man and allowing us to contemplate the imperturbable Seal that rests in these parts. The Tobogán allows us to go through the narrow passages formed by the water, passages that have their highest point in the Sea of Stones that awaits us further on. On the way back, the pink marks of the route take us from the waves of the Sea of Stones to contemplate the tireless struggle between the Elephant and the Crocodile. A dispute from which The Convent and its peculiar entrance door allow us to escape. Little by little we reach the end of the route, but not before contemplating the grandiose Tortoise or the solitary Bears that inhabit this area of the Enchanted City. Finally, before returning to the car park (1h 30min), the Lovers of Teruel await us, who have been trying for thousands of years to complete the kiss that seals their eternal love.
1-Please note that although the route is conditioned, it is not accessible for people with reduced mobility, nor for pushchairs.
2-At the moment there are no online ticket sales and it is not guaranteed that you can pay by credit card either.
3-Times may vary depending on weather conditions, don't forget that you are at an altitude of almost 1500m.
4-Although the route is initially uncomplicated, it is advisable to wear clothing and footwear suitable for hiking.

¿Did you know that...
Not far from the Enchanted City and the road that leads to the Devil's Window is another of the curious formations that characterise this area of Cuenca. This is the Stone of the Anvil, a colossal stone whose silhouette is reminiscent of this blacksmith's tool.

The Devil's Window is a natural cave from which you can see the gorges of the river Júcar in all their splendour. You will find it on the CM-2105 road that leaves Cuenca towards the Enchanted City. Once there, there is a small car park from where the path that leads to this imposing natural balcony barely 100m long starts.
