The Lunar New Year Cup has been a fixture on the Hong Kong football calendar for many a year and is also responsible for bringing some of the biggest names in the game to the city.

Brazil’s World Cup winners of 2002 came in 2005 with a squad packed full of household names and plenty of Uefa Champions League winners also made the trip.

These are some of the images from the South China Morning Post’s archives of tournaments gone by.

This year’s Lunar New Year Cup features former World Cup winning striker Fernando Torres, who will be in town with his Japanese side Sagan Tosu.

Chinese Super League team Shandong Luneng and new signing Marouane Fellaini will play them on the opening day of the tournament on February 5.

The other teams are a Hong Kong League Select side convened by Hong Kong Premier League club Pegasus and New Zealand champions Auckland City.

Games take place on February 5 and 7 at Hong Kong Stadium.
