In HBO’s Curb Your Enthusiasm, Larry David – playing a more exaggerated version of himself – first has a long-suffering wife named Cheryl, then a series of unfortunate girlfriends, and certainly no children or pets. In fact, his only interactions with kids end in disaster, and the same can be said of the animals on the show.

So fans of the Golden Globe-winning comedy might be surprised to find out that in real life, David has a loving family and more than one pet.

Here’s what you need to know about the 76-year-old’s squad.

David’s IRL wife is Ashley Underwood, a producer known for working on two of Sasha Baron Cohen’s projects: Borat Subsequent Moviefilm and the TV series Who is America.

In fact, it was at Baron Cohen’s birthday party in 2017 that the pair met, according to an interview David gave to The New York Times. The pair were seated next to each other at dinner and it was going swimmingly – until he abruptly got up and left.

“Much to her surprise, I left before dessert. I was doing so well, banter-wise, I didn’t want to risk staying too long and blowing the good impression,” the comedian told the paper. It seemed to work: the couple moved in together in 2019 and married in 2020, per People.

Turns out the real Larry David is a bit of a softie when it comes to animals. Per GQ, the Seinfeld writer regularly cuddles up to Underwood’s black and white cat Elwood, and the couple also adopted a German shepherd they’ve named Bernie.

Larry has two daughters – 29-year-old Cazzie and 28-year-old Romy – from his first marriage to environmental activist Laurie David. Laurie also produced the Oscar-winning documentary An Inconvenient Truth. The couple were together from 1993 until 2007.

Romy is much more private than her older sister and, aside from several photos shared to Cazzie’s Instagram – and a brief appearance with her dad in an episode of Hannah Montana as a tween – she generally keeps herself out of the spotlight. According to People, the 28-year old is currently studying for a master’s in oral history at Columbia University.

Her bio on the university’s website reveals a couple of other interesting facts, however: that she interned at the White House during Barack Obama’s presidency, and that she was an associate producer at MSNBC, where it was her job to book guests onto the channel’s shows. With 620,000 followers on Instagram at the time of writing, a published book, dozens of online articles, an acting role in The Umbrella Academy and her own web series, Cazzie is clearly the other performer in the family.

Next up? Writing and directing a romcom called I Love You Forever starring Jack Nicholson’s son Ray.

In addition to her numerous career achievements, Cazzie is also known for being one of the many women who has dated Pete Davidson. The pair were together for just over two years. Within days of the pair breaking up, she realised Davidson was already seeing Ariana Grande. In her book of essays, No One Asked for This, David recounts sobbing for hours in her dad’s arms.

“Cazzie, come on! Your ancestors survived the Holocaust,” David reportedly said while consoling her, according to the LA Times.
