Mit einer "Größe" von maximal 11 Metern gehören Minkwale zu den kleinsten Walen überhaupt, der größte Wal mit bis zu 33 Metern ist der Blauwal (Balaenoptera musculus).
Balaenoptera acutorostrata lebt ozeanodrom von den kalten arktischen Gewässern bis in die sehr warmen tropischen Ozeane, zudem wandern die Wale, um ihren Nachwuchs in den tropischen Gewässern zu gebären und zu säugen.

Auf der Speisekarte dieses Wals stehen allerlei kleine Fische, wie Heringe, Sandaale, Seebrassen, Heringe, Sardellen, Kabeljau, Plattfische, Lachsspierlinge, Lodden, Schellfische, Wittlinge, Lachse, Köhler, Makrelen, Sardinen, Sprotten, Pollacks, Dorsche sowie verschiedene Grundeln.
Neben allen Arten von Tintenfischen gerne auch kleine Krustentiere wie Krill und verschiedene Copepoden auf der Menüliste.

Alle Zwergwale und auch die Kälber vieler großer Wale werden ihrerseits von einem anderen Säugetier, dem Spitzenpredator der Meere gejagt, dem Schwertwal (Orcinus orca), so sind alle aufgezählten Tiere "Mitglieder der marinen Nahrungskette".
Aber auch andere Tierchen "lieben" diesen Wal, nämlich Parasiten wie Schlauchwürmer, Fadenwürmer und Bandwürmer.
Die Encyclopedia of Life berichtet zudem, dass der Minkwal auch vom Grönlandhai (Somniosus microcephalus) erbeutet werden soll.

Balaenoptera acutorostrata kommt als Paar, in kleinen Gruppen oder als Einzeltier vor.

Der nördliche Zwergwal wird in der IUCN Roten Liste bedrohter Arten derzeit als "nicht gefährdet" geführt.
