Info
Sebastes miniatus (Jordan & Gilbert, 1880)
Even if the species name "miniatus" may signal something else, this colorfully very interesting spinyhead can reach a size of up to 91cm, about the size of a two-year-old child.
Interesting is, beside an, under very good conditions, reachable age of up to 60 years, also the fact that spinyheads belong to the viviparous animals, like also some shark species.
An essential advantage of viviparous species is that immediately swimmable young fish come into the world, which can escape from one or the other danger by swimming fast and reaching hiding places.
When eggs are laid, despite partial self-sacrificing protection by parents, large numbers often fall victim to greedy predators, spawn may become fungal or suffer damage from sudden temperature changes.
This spiny head is clearly conspicuous by its vermilion coloration with more or less pronounced white spots.
Not an animal for a home aquarium, but certainly a color magnet in large display aquariums.
Synonyms:
Sebastes (Rosicola) miniatus (Jordan & Gilbert, 1880)
Sebastichthys miniatus Jordan & Gilbert, 1880
Sebastodes miniatus (Jordan & Gilbert, 1880)
