Description:

COLLECTION OF CHULUCANA PERUVIAN POTTERY INCLUDING SEVERAL PIECES BY SANTODIO PAZ JUAREZ Santodio Paz Juarez is one of the foremost artisans of Chulucana pottery following in the tradition of the ancient Vicus culture and his work has been exhibited internationally. His artist's statement declares:

"Since my childhood I have been in the pottery business. However, it was in 1986 when I decided to dedicate myself full-time to ceramics and pottery, as it gives me great personal satisfaction. I consider myself to be a self-taught artist, like the majority of other artisans in my town. It is mainly through our daily routine that we perfect our craft, as well as through visiting with and listening to the older artists in our community.

The majority of my works are inspired by the typical scenes from the region I live in. It is my nature to be creative in my designs- I am always innovating. My works are characterized by their spherical and symmetrical shapes. I make birds, flowers and pieces that carry the motifs of my native Piura, the state where I grew up.

The technique that I utilize is for the most part pre-Columbian in nature. For example, my molding technique, inherited from the Vicus culture, consists of applying rhythmic blows to the piece with a stone and wooden stick, eventually achieving the desired form.

I am always applying new design elements to my works, which are a product of my observations about the continually changing nature of beings and things, which is a process I feel never ends. The day it ends is the day I'm dead."
