Pensacon adds genre icon James Marsters, more

From Sunnydale to sunny Pensacola, actor James Marsters has joined the star-studded roster of guests for Pensacon 2017.

Seen in character as Spike on "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," actor James Marsters has joined the bill for Pensacon 2017.

Best known for his iconic role as Spike on "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and its companion series, "Angel," Marsters has become a genre favorite over the years, with major roles in other properties including "Smallville," the "Doctor Who" spin-off "Torchwood," "Hawaii Five-O" and "Battlestar Galactica" spin-off "Caprica," as well as guest appearances on "Supernatural," "Andromeda" and "Millennium" and extensive voice acting experience. Marsters is also an accomplished singer and guitarist, releasing albums as a solo artist and with his band, Ghost of the Robot.

Marsters is perhaps the biggest recent addition to the bill for the fourth annual nerd culture convention, set for Feb. 17-19 in downtown Pensacola, with venues including the Pensacola Bay Center, the Pensacola Grand Hotel, the Saenger Theatre and the Rex Theatre. Among the other recent additions:

  • Voice actor Bob Bergen, best known as the voice of Porky Pig, whose other credits include roles in "Akira" and "Lupin the Third."
  • Original "Star Trek" star Walter Koenig, also well known for his work on "Babylon 5."
  • Actor and comedian Carlos Alazraqui, who played Deputy James Garcia on "Reno 911" and whose voice acting credits include “Rocko’s Modern Life," "The Fairly Oddparents," "Family Guy,” Disney's "Planes" and the Taco Bell Chihuahua.
  • Comics and animation artist Scott Shaw!, the co-creator of "Captain Carrot and His Amazing Zoo Crew!," whose work spans nearly every major animated character of the past 50 years.
  • Horror historian, author and documentarian David J. Skal.
  • Actor John Paragon, best known as Jambi from "Pee-Wee's Playhouse," whose career also includes roles in "UHF," "Elvira: Mistress of the Dark" and a memorable part on "Seinfeld."
  • Fantasy illustrator Brian LeBlanc, best known for his work on White Wolf's World of Darkness gaming titles including "Werewolf: The Apocalypse," "Vampire: the Masquerade," "Scarred Land" and "Changeling."
  • Actor and puppeteer Tim Rose, who performed as Admiral Ackbar in the "Star Wars" films, and whose other work includes "The Dark Crystal," "Howard the Duck," "Sesame Street" and "Doctor Who."
  • Legendary comics artist Jose Delbo, whose work spans nearly every publisher and character imaginable, including beloved runs on Wonder Woman, Batgirl and Transformers.

These additions will join such previously announced celebrity guests as Sylvester McCoy ("Doctor Who," "The Hobbit"), Sophie Aldred ("Doctor Who"), Matt Gerald ("Daredevil," "Avatar"), wrestling icon Jake "The Snake" Roberts, Sandahl Bergman ("Conan the Barbarian," "Red Sonja"), Sven-Ole Thorson (the "Conan" films, "Mallrats," "Gladiator") and "Comic Book Men" stars Ming Chen and Mike Zapcic.
