Fresh from a critically acclaimed performance in the psychedelic art-house horror film Mandy, Nicolas Cage is returning to the action movie niche that many fans love him for. Jiu Jitsu is a martial arts science fiction indie flick written and directed by Dimitri Logothetis, the filmmaker behind the recent reboot of the Kickboxer franchise.

Jiu Jitsu will star Alain Moussi in the lead role; the actor and stuntman previously starred in Logothetis’ Kickboxer: Vengeance and Kickboxer: Retaliation. He currently plays Batman in DC’s Titans, and has worked as a stunt coordinator on the X-Men movies and the DCEU’s Suicide Squad and Shazam!

“After we successfully reintroduced the Kickboxer franchise to a new generation of martial arts fans with the sixth and seventh entries in the series, we set out to up the ante with a sci-fi martial arts franchise that could bring the same kind of intensity and longevity to a new arena,” Logothetis told The Hollywood Reporter.

Cage is set to play Wylie, a supporting character who helps Moussi’s hero on his journey. At least, that’s what we can tell from the film’s official synopsis, which honestly sounds pretty wild. Based on a comic book written by Logothetis and Jim McGrath, Jiu Jitsu tells the story of an epic conflict between humans and aliens:

“Every six years, an ancient order of expert Jiu Jitsu fighters faces a fearsome alien invader in a battle for Earth,” the plot summary reads. “When war hero and master Jiu Jitsu fighter Jake Barnes (Moussi) refuses to face Brax, the indomitable leader of the invaders, the future of humanity hangs in the balance.”

“Injured and suffering from severe amnesia, Jake is captured by a military squad who have descended upon the planet and is rescued by Wylie (Cage) and a team of fellow Jiu Jitsu fighters who must help him recover his memory and regain his strength to engage in an epic battle that will once again determine the fate of mankind.”
