"Since 1999, National Military Appreciation Month has honored the commitment and sacrifice of servicemembers and their families. Military Spouse Appreciation Day, Armed Forces Week, Armed Forces Day, and Memorial Day all occur during National Military Appreciation Month, allowing Americans to collectively express our gratitude each May for those who have served, those currently serving, and their loved ones. "Every day, soldiers, sailors, Marines, Coast Guardsmen, airmen, Space Force Guardians, and reservists uphold the interests and security of our nation. I, for one, am humbled by that dedication and patriotism, which extends to my own grandfather’s service in the Navy during World War II along with several of his brothers and brothers-in-law who served in the Army and Navy. And, it includes my father’s time in the U.S. Coast Guard Reserve several decades later. "U.S. Armed Forces serving globally often uproot their whole lives to pursue the greater good, and military families must carry on despite their absence, whether that be for a two week or two-year tour of duty. So, when you see military servicemembers and their families, thank them for serving, thank them for their commitment, and thank them for making our nation stronger. It will mean more to them than you may realize. "In sum, the NCUA and the credit union system are better, healthier, more resilient, and more inclusive thanks to our veterans who work at the NCUA. It’s also a point of pride and a source of strength that more than one in seven employees at the NCUA is a current or former member of the U.S. Military. Their dedication to our nation and to our agency is an inspiration to us all. As always, be safe, be well, be kind. And, be thankful for our men and women in uniform," NCUA Chairman Todd M. Harper said in a message to all NCUA employees recognizing the start of Military Appreciation Month. "Every May, we observe Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month. May is the month of the first Japanese immigrants’ arrival to the United States in 1843, and the completion of the transcontinental railroad in 1869, which Chinese workers were instrumental in building. This is a time to acknowledge and applaud the contributions of the AANHPI community to the federal government and to our country. "This year’s theme is Advancing Leaders Through Innovation. The AANHPI community has shaped our country through innovation, science, technology, education, and invention. Here are just a few examples of AANHPI community members whose contributions embody this theme: • Peter Tsai, born in Taiwan, invented the N95 mask. • Flossie Wong-Staal, born in China, was the first to clone HIV, leading to drug cocktails that manage AIDS. • Ajay Bhatt, born in India, was the co-creator of the USB technology. • Reshma Saujani founded a non-profit to help young girls enter the STEM field, Girls Who Code, and was the first Indian American woman to run for U.S. Congress. "As a member of the AANHPI community, I am proud of our rich heritage and diversity. The NCUA also recognizes and praises the work of its AANHPI employees—we are a stronger agency because of their efforts. It is an honor to work with everyone at the agency," NCUA Board Member Tanya Otsuka said in a message to all NCUA employees recognizing the start of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month.
