REDMOND, Wash. — Some of Harry Terhanian’s best friends are cows. The entrepreneur and philanthropist is the founder of the Goloka Cow Shelter, in Redmond and Arlington.
"We always treat them with love and devotion," Terhanian said.
The farms are supported by Northwest Share, a nonprofit that lives its message of peace and respect for all living things, rooted in the Vedic culture of South Asia.
"Care, kindness, gentle nature," said Latha Sambamurti, Artistic, Outreach and Development Director of NorthWest Share.
Terhanian explained, "When you protect the cow it renders prosperity and peace."
On this farm, the nearly 30 cows are relaxed and friendly.
"They’re very docile," Terhanian said.
Sambamurti added, "They appreciate love and affection."
Families are welcome to visit by appointment.
"People can easily come, bring their kids, and associate with the cows," Terhanain said.
Some of the residents are rescue animals.
"They also learn to trust humans." Sambamurti said. "Even after they’ve been abused for a long time."
None of these cows will ever be harmed.
"Cows symbolizes motherhood," she said.
Their milk is considered a sacred gift.
"That’s a miracle," Terhanian explained.
All of them have a safe and permanent place to call home.
"If you protect a cow it brings prosperity, happiness and peace in your life," Terhanian said.
