Information

Located in Campo Grande, on the northern area of the cosmopolitan Portuguese Capital, Lisboa, the Tombo Tower is the designation for the central archive of the Country, since the early Medieval Period.
Formerly te central archive was situated in the Tombo Tower of the São Jorge Castle (from 1378 up to 1755), hence its designation. With the big earthquake of 1755, as it was endangered, the archive was transferred to the São Bento Palace (the Prime Minister official residence) up until the construction of the present building in 1990.

The project of this present building was signed by Arsénio Cordeiro and António Barreiros. Occupying an area of 54.900 square meters, it contains an area of archive and investigation, another prepared for the most diversified activities and another one for administrative services.

In the Tombo Tower are archived several important and historic documents. The access is free for everyone older than 18 years old with a valid identification card.
There is also available a permanent exhibition named as “National Memory Museum”, as well as a restaurant and cafeteria and a shop with multimedia and art products.
