Sunny the meerkat travels the world in the search of the perfect Christmas.
Sunny wants a white Christmas, with a decorated tree, carols and sprouts for dinner . . . none of which he can see at home in the Kalahari desert. So off he heads to find the perfect Christmas elsewhere, before realizing that maybe Christmas isn't all about the trimmings.
Emily Gravett is twice winner of the prestigious Kate Greenaway Medal and the Nestlé Children's Book Prize Bronze Award for WOLVES and LITTLE MOUSE'S BIG BOOK OF FEARS. 4.5 STARS This is fun! My children both really enjoyed it. Emily Gravett is sometimes a miss for me, but I love books like this with little lift the flap bits, letters and postcards, and travel so this one was right up my ally. The illustrations are wonderful, capturing the atmosphere of each local on the meerkat’s travels, and the expressions on the animal’s faces convey so much emotion. It’s full of humor, but also has the sweet message that Christmas isn’t about the trimmings, it’s about being with the people you love.
Disclaimer: I've been a major meerkat fan since long before the rest of the public was aware of them, thanks to reading a very early research paper about them. Also, the critters in this delightful book are old friends, first appearing in MEERKAT MAIL. Now... I LOVE this, and it is a guaranteed winner for kids across many ages and global locations. The first of seven interior flaps sets the challenge- a "perfect" Chistmas, as described in an aspirational magazine every . This sends Sunny Meerkat on a journey around the world to find a place that provided every element of that perfect Christmas, which includes "well-boiled brussels sprouts". You take it from there, and allow plenty of time to note illustration details, including those that fill the endpapers.

"It's nearly Christmas in the Kalahari, and all the meerkats are busy."
All the meerkats are excited for the holiday except Sunny. Sunny has been reading PERFECT magazine Xmas Extra and comparing their idea of the perfect Christmas to what they have going on in the Kalahari, Sunny is disappointed. There's supposed to be snow, a huge pile of presents, a perfect tree, a dinner that includes brussel sprouts and Christmas carols. So, Sunny goes in search of this perfect Christmas.
Every spot he visits has at least one element missing until he arrives at the mouse house. All the elements are there, but "something still isn't right." Sunny misses his family. But don't worry, Santa has a plan to help.
Sunny the Meerkat is getting ready for Christmas in the Kalahari when he reads a magazine about what a "perfect" Christmas should have. HIs sandy, sunny Christmas doesn't look "right" so he sets off to find the Perfect Christmas. This book is for every child who lives somewhere that doesn't look like the Christmas traditionally pictured in movies and books. For those of us with palm trees and sunshine outside or desert or whatever else, Meerkat's search and his ultimate discovery will touch your heart. As a bonus, Meerkat sends his family cards from each of his destinations and they pop out on the page like the letters delivered in the JOLLY POSTMAN classic. A warm Christmas story that shows us that Christmas can be perfect anywhere.
Another delightful story about Sunny, the adventurous and curious Meerkat as he sets off to find all the perfect requirements for Christmas listed in his Perfect Magazine. This takes him around the world to different climates, cultures and Christmas customs. The story line is simple and humorous and will engage young readers. Gravett has embellished this with a further layer of enjoyment through added features - including the magazine that opens, Christmas cards, meerkat recipes and instructions for Christmas decorations and so much more that will draw in older independent readers as well. All extra features are sturdy and will survive the rigors of young hands. An absolute delight!
This is such an usual Christmas book that your not often find to read. You wouldn't think a meerkat would have a book about Christmas. Cassie loves any books with animals in them and so it was not surprising that she loved this book. The illustrations in this book are colorful and will capture the personalities of the meerkat and any character in the book. This is such a fun book and I feel like the storyline is adorable and different. Especially for kids who feel like Christmas has to be a certain way when in reality Christmas is about being around loved ones. I recommend checking this book out.
This delightfully different Christmas story follows a young meerkat named Sunny. He longs desperately for a 'Perfect Christmas'. But the way his magazine defines a perfect Christmas does not fit at all with the Christmas his family is putting together involving decorating cacti, painting snakes to look like candy canes, and bugs as ornaments. So Sunny leaves to find his perfect Christmas. He visits his friend Kev at the beach, Trevor among the trees, Robin in the rain, Penguins at the South Pole, and at home with the mice. Despite his efforts, none of the places Sunny visits are quite right. It seems there is no perfect Christmas. Can Santa help young Sunny find where he belongs for Christmas or is Sunny bound to be disappointed? With 7 festive flaps showing letters as Sunny communicates with his family, the reader follows Sunny's journey through hope and disappointment. Eventually, the reader, along with Sunny, realizes that Christmas is in the heart of the beholder, and nothing can replace family. Gravett's adorable illustrations make for a fun story time with lots of enjoyable details. A great story for reading and sharing at Christmas.

This tale of family and festive fun is full of Christmas cards to read as you follow Sunny’s journey from the Kalahari desert as he looks for his perfect Christmas.
This is a new to us children's book that came into the library for a customer's hold. It is too cute! I think families will love to read this, but it may not stay so cute for long with all the holds there will be.
There are parts that kind of pop up, cards/postcards.
All about this meerkat in search of the perfect Christmas with a checklist. But it turns out his perfect Christmas was back home with his family, where he started 🥰
