Another drawing of Azad, one of my most recent characters. He's a nomad who wanders around riding his trusted war-chicken Tara.
His people, the Jedhazi, wander around the great desert called "Golden Sea", trading, hunting and occasionally attacking the settlements of their sedentary cousins, the Tol'kahir.
Compared to the soldiers of the Tol'kahir city-states, who deploy phalanxes of heavily armored infantrymen and small units of heavy bird-cavalry, the Jedhazi warriors use only use light bird-cavalry, moving quickly around their slower enemies while throwing hundreds of projectiles at them. Every Jedhazi warrior must master the use of the bow and atlatl.
(I really should make a reference only about the war tactics of desert people)

Ooh this is epic!
Based on your text, I am seeing a 'textbook' piece of how battles are fought for the different factions you got… That would no doubt be interesting to see.

Very nice as always, I wonder if this Jedhazi is the one that got our sleeping soldier in trouble? looks cute enough ;)
great as always--the details really make it. what's the little thing he's holding in his right hand? a war horn? axe?
That’s the atlatl itself. The thing that sets the dart in motion towards whatever it’s meant to skewer.
yep, the atlatl. in fact it's a never that adds up to 30% to the javelin or spear in terms of reach and piercing power.
I believe you mean 'lever', but yes, you're correct. A very interesting (as well as very old) weapon weapon and ingenuitive as hell. It's believed to have been in use by man about 30,000 years ago. On a side note, my spellcheck hates 'ingenuitive' for some reason, lol.
I'm working without spellchecker here since it checks almost every word. XD so it slipped past me. yes, I meant to type lever. :)
30.000 years, hm. so maybe this guy has used it already hunting deer: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lion-man

I'm just messing with ya anyway, lol. 'Course, I've seen spellchecker do some funky stuff before too that made me question my computer's sanity, lol.
Atlatl is fun if you have the knack of it! Ace pic again <3
That's a good way to get your point across Excellent work and I love the touch of the bird head carving on the Atlatl. Amazing how a length of wood or bone can increase the force of a throw - one could bring down a Wooly Mammoth with those weapons during the ice age or ventilate a Spanish Soldier causing trouble outside the Aztec capital at a later age.
And if you used javelins with barbed heads, you could really fuck the conquistadors’ shit up.
Started looking at some newly made target and hunting Atlatls. Got to y y one some years ago, was fun.
They really really like their ranged attacks, in a way despite the Harshness of the Golden Sea, the tactics of the Jedhazi would be made to further inflict suffering of any invading force for sure.
nice pose. he looks rather easy, but I guess he's targeting or something?
His next meal (or opponent, though he looks pretty at-ease here) stands no chance!
This is cool, I like the spear he's got and toned paper is always a favorite of mine
Yes! I remember seeing on some documentary how these weapons worked. The throwing thing you use to toss the spear with gives the spear extra power and it will fly farther and straighter. LOVE this sepia background you're using, PRETTY! :)
Very nice depiction of this ancient weaponry! All those details and the pose is splendid!
Sounds like the Jedhazi bird cavalry (birbry?) operate like Numidian light cavalry, skirmishing, scouting, raiding lines of supply, and harassing the flanks of enemy formations while protecting the flanks of any friendly forces.
