Denzel Washington Movie From 2021 Makes Big Debut On Netflix’s Global And US Movies Charts

Following

A Denzel Washington movie hurt in theaters by the COVID-19 pandemic is finding a new life on Netflix NFLX .

The crime thriller The Little Things — co-starring Jared Leto and Rami Malek — made a big impression on Netflix viewers with a No. 2 debut on Netflix’s Top 10 Global Movies chart for the week of April 1-7 with 8.7 million views, which equates to 18.6 million hours viewed.

Stateside, the film debuted at No. 1 on the Netflix U.S. Movies chart.

Coming in at No. 1 for the second consecutive week on the streamer’s Global Top 10 Movies chart was the Netflix original movie Heart of the Hunter with 10.9 million views, which equates to 19.5 million hours viewed.

Washington stars in The Little Things as Joe Deacon, a California detective from Kern County who teams with LA County Detective Jimmy Baxter (Malek) to find Albert Sparma (Leto), who is suspected of being a serial killer.

Despite the star power The Little Things had with three Oscar winners playing the main roles, the film struggled at the worldwide box office. Since it was released in January 2021 when movie theaters were struggling to attract audiences because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the film made a mere $15.3 million domestically and $15.5 million in international markets against a $30 million budget.

Also cutting into the film’s theatrical business was Warner Bros. Pictures' decision to release its entire 2021 movie theater slate day-and-date on its Max streaming service, known at the time as HBO Max. One bright light emerged out of The Little Things' misfortunes, though, as Leto earned a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination for his portrayal of his menacing character.

The Little Things Is 1 of 8 New Movies To Debut In Netflix’s Global Top 10

Seven other films accompanied The Little Things as new entries on Netflix’s Global Top 10 Movies chart. The Maze Runner, Glass and The Beautiful Game rounded out the top five, while the Netflix original movie Scoop debuted at No. 6.

In all likelihood, Scoop will continue to rise on the chart since the movie was released on Netflix on April 5. A chronicle of how the BBC’s Newsnight program secured what turned out to be a disastrous 2019 interview for Prince Andrew as he explained his friendship with sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, Scoop was viewed 5.3 million times, which equated to 10 million hours viewed.

Rufus Sewell stars as Prince Andrew in the film, while Gillian Anderson plays Emily Maitlis, the Newsnight interviewer who put the royal on the spot. Billie Piper also stars in Scoop as Sam McAlister, the real-life Newsnight producer who secured the blockbuster Prince Andrew interview.

The Netflix original movie Damsel — a fantasy adventure featuring Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown — was the only other holdover on the Global Top 10 Movies chart with a No. 7 finish in its fifth week of release. Baby Driver placed No. 8 in its debut in the Top 10, followed by other Global Movies Chart newcomers Maze Runner: The Scorch Trial at No. 9 and Letters to God at No. 10.

Falling out of the Top 10 after one week was the obscure Mel Gibson psychological crime thriller On the Line, which immediately began trending on Netflix when it debuted on the streamer three weeks ago.
