An amorous bird of paradise melted viewers' hearts on Planet Earth last night - after his advances were spurned by a female.

The red bird of paradise was filmed performing an elaborate mating dance on Sunday night's episode, which focused on species living in jungles.

While his would-be mate showed signs of interest at first, he was rejected despite his best efforts and forced to look elsewhere.

Viewers of the BBC wildlife documentary took to Twitter to say they had been left 'in tears' by the bird's plight.

Rachael wrote: 'The bird at the end of planet earth two had me in literal tears... he just wanted a lady friend.'

Another tweeted: 'Oh my goodness the bird of paradise bit on planet earth,' while Rach joked that he 'understood consent better than some human males'. 

Others were more impressed by the female's attitude to her suitors, with farran writing: 'Never related to something so much than that unimpressed female bird on Planet Earth.'

Another sequence focused on a Wilson's bird-of-paradise, a smaller, more colourful species which cleared an entire section of rainforest to create a 'display court' in a bid to impress a potential mate.

Film crews captured the impressive footage by venturing deep into the Raja Ampat Islands in West Papua dressed in camouflage, and setting up a series of cameras high in the treetops.
