To stand in front of the Trevi Fountain is awe-inspiring. It fills the piazza in which it sits, dominating the space. When you see it you are viewing it up close. Your vision is filled with an 85.28 ft (26,30 m) high, 65 ft (19.81 m) wide work of art. The sound of cascading water fills your ears as excitement of the crowd hums in the breeze. That is why people come here, to be swept up in the moment and to experience it’s gravitational pull.

The main figure in the center is Oceanus the Roman god of the sea. He has a beard to indicate wisdom. You can see Abundance personified on his right with a basket of produce the symbol of plenty. To his left is Health (Salus) crowned with a laurel wreath and holding a cup that a snake is sipping from. (The symbol of doctors today is a staff entwined with two snakes.) In front of them are two Tritons. One is young with an energetic horse and the other is older with a calm horse.

Work began on this fountain began in 1732, but it’s roots are much older. In 19 BC when Roman engineers built the Aqua Virgo (the Acqua Vergine today) to supply the baths near the Pantheon with fresh water.

In the 1600’s the Baroque master Bernini was commissioned to redesign the fountain but the budget ran out and it was never finished. That had to wait until 1732 when the designs of Nicola Salvi won a contest to complete the fountain. Unfortunately when he died the fountain was only half way done, so ultimately it fell to Giuseppe Pannini finish it.
