Antony Hegarty — of Antony & the Johnsons and formerly of Hercules and Love Affair — is going in on Pope Francis after the so-called progressive Pope copped to meeting with regressive homophobe Kim Davis during his visit to Washington, D.C.
“Apparently Pope Francis was working behind the scenes to undermine gay rights in America. How shameful and pathetic of him,” Hegarty wrote on her band’s Facebook. “I have been so impressed with his approach to climate and his call to end the death penalty in the U.S. But for him to make insidious comments about how the ‘traditional family’ is under threat (presumably from gay marriage) and then to secretly meet that poor misguided cretin Kim Davis…”
According to Davis’ lawyer, Pope Francis met with Davis and her husband for 15 minutes and told her to “stay strong.” Oddly enough, Davis isn’t even Catholic – she’s an Apostolic Christian.

Hegarty goes on to call out the Pope for not bothering to make amends for the Church’s long history of violent homophobia.

“He should issue a formal apology on behalf of the Vatican for centuries of persecuting, torturing and killing gay and transgendered people in the name of their god. Or are we not worthy of his humility, unlike criminals, the American indigenous, and the poor? And he doesn’t even have the political courage to speak of his bigotry directly. Knowing it would hurt his popularity, he slithers around in secret, watering the seeds of hatred and violence against gay, lesbian and transgendered people.”
In other Pope music news, His Holiness recently revealed he was releasing a prog-rock-ish album entitled Wake Up! Given his political leaning, he might want to look toward someone like Ted Nugent if he ever needs an opening act.
