The CONMEBOL Libertadores Cup reaches its much-anticipated finale, and the match promises to be a memorable one in the history of the world's oldest club tournament.
Club Atlético Boca Juniors, founded in 1905, has six Libertadores trophies and has appeared in 11 finals. The team's most recent title, under the management of Jorge Almirón, was in 2007 when they defeated Gremio. Their last final was in 2018 when they were beaten by their archrivals, River Plate.
Additionally, Boca has the distinction of reaching the final without winning any matches in regular time since the round of 16.
The blue and gold club drew all their matches: Round of 16 against Nacional de Montevideo, quarter-finals against Racing, and the semi-final against Palmeiras. In all three instances, they prevailed on penalties, with goalkeeper Sergio "Chiquito" Romero always playing a starring role.
Fluminense Football Club, founded in 1902, has participated in just one Libertadores final and lost to Liga Deportiva Universitaria de Quito in 2008.
They boast the tournament's top scorer, the Argentine Germán Cano with 12 goals, as well as the presence of Marcelo, the former Real Madrid player and five-time UEFA Champions League winner.
Where will the final be played? The iconic Maracanã Stadium, which is also Fluminense's home ground in the local league and has a seating capacity of 78,838 spectators. This venue will host the showdown between these clubs that have historically faced off seven times in the Libertadores. Boca won on three occasions, Fluminense claimed victory twice, and the other two matches ended in draws.
