Arsenal defender David Luiz held talks over "months" with manager Mikel Arteta before it was decided he would leave.

The 34-year-old will be a free agent this summer after having spent two years in north London.

A hamstring injury means the Brazilian is unlikely to add to his 30 appearances in all competitions this season.

"After some conversations we decided that it was the best way to do it now," said Arteta.

"I tried to help him as much as I possibly could - the club as well," he continued.

Luiz, who joined Arsenal from London rivals Chelsea for £8m in August 2019, has won the Premier League, Champions League and three FA Cups while playing in England.

"I feel sadness as well because you get attached to the players emotionally. Again, I have to say thank you to him," Arteta added.

It is not yet known whether the former Paris St-Germain and Brazil defender intends to remain in England.
