Echium Vulgare – Blueweed also known as Viper’s Bugloss, is an upright plant with dense
cylindrical spikes of bell-shaped flowers that are a violet-blue color with protruding red stamens, the flowers start pink and turn vivid blue .The flowers are followed by rough nutlets which resemble viper heads before the plant dies. They rise atop a basal clump of leaves that are lance-shaped with bristly hairs. This plant was once used as a treatment for viper snake bites, hence the common name. But don’t worry, this plant doesn’t attract snakes!! This plant has a blooming season ranging from late Spring to early Fall, grows best in full sun with well-draining soil, and will grow between 12-30 inches tall, and
is also drought tolerant. These showy flowers will attract pollinators to your garden such as Butterflies and Bees while being resistant to Deer and Rabbits. They do well in beds and borders in the garden, and this plant does reseed freely; removing flowering spikes before the nutlets mature is recommended if you don’t want it to self-seed. Another great feature about this plant is that it is low maintenance, which every busy gardener will appreciate! The plant root was used in ancient times as a treatment for snake or viper bites .

I urge anyone buying seed to do their homework on germination, I have not raised and cannot raise many of these plants as I am sub-tropics here in St Augustine, Florida. All seed are NOT alike! There are so many different factors in germination and not doing a search is throwing your money away. I want everyone to be successful when growing your flowers from seed it is the most rewarding experience in Gardening and you can do it, if you give the seed what it needs to grow. I always check 3 sites of info to choose how I will go about it. It is not hard to do, if you do it right!
