About 100 people are reported to have been killed, and scores more wounded, when the Indonesian security forces fired on a group of mourners at Santa Cruz cemetery in Dili, East Timor, on 12 November 1991. Many others were allegedly badly beaten during the incident. Many of the victims were school students and other young people among a crowd of approximately 3,000 attending the funeral of Sebastiao (Gomes) Rangel, killed on 28 October when Indonesian troops entered a church at Motael, Dili where he and about 20 other opposition activists had been hiding. At least 42 people, possibly as many as 300, were detained after the Santa Cruz killings. Some are reported to have been tortured and killed in police custody and subsequently buried in unmarked graves.
