Schmied, Francois-Louis (illustrator). First edition. One of a total edition of 177 copies, all on japon (this one of twenty for collaborators), signed by Schmied in the colophon. 13 x 10 inches, [32] leaves, (plus front and rear endpapers); 8 full-page color wood block illustrations, (including the cover) and 23 other designs. Original wrappers, fine condition, in publisher's blue cloth chemise and slipcase. In his book on Schmied, Mauro Nasti notes the incorporation in this volume of both Schmied's naturalistic style and abstract decorative motifs, and here the two styles seem to mesh in perfect harmony, producing the most beautiful of any of his work, and one of the most beautiful of any twentieth century book, with complex and integrated illustrations typography and decoration. The title page alone is "the most intricate of all Schmied's illustrations, requiring some forty-five different blocks to achieve the lacquer-like quality he wanted. And then it took almost two months to print that single page" (Ward Ritchie). The full-page illustrations of the scribe and the man carrying a book are Schmied's self-portraits.

Limited edition, one of 120 named examples on vélin teinté d'Arches printed for the members of the Lyon society, this example for Maurice Méric, 4to (25.5 x 20 cm); 54 illustrations in colour, drawn and engraved by Schmied (of which 26 are full-page); tan morocco binding, signed and dated 1998 by Honneger, with an abstract rectangle design to the covers, made up of red, green and brown morocco and yellow shagreen, with gilt lines, morocco doublures with gilt detail and cream suede guards, original wrappers bound in, in a morocco backed, brown suede lined, cloth clamshell box with gilt title to spine, an excellent copy. A wonderful edition of Paul Fort's Ballades françaises, which helped earn him the honorary French title of 'Prince of Poets'. The printer, painter and illustrator, Francois-Louis Schmied drew and engraved the charming illustrations to the text. Having rose to fame with his illustrations for Kipling's The Jungle Book in 1919, he produced luxurious books in very small editions for subscribers and bibliophiles. His strategy was to display sheets of his art work in progress at fairs and secure the interest of wealthy organisations and patrons before going to print. With financial backing and immense talent, he was able to become one of the most influential and active figures in Art Deco publishing and a master of the style.

Exquisite unpag. example of Art Deco book design, detailing a 3-month journey the artist undertook with Jean Dunand aboard the schooner Peau-Brune, sailing from St. Nazaire in Brittany, around the Iberian Peninsula and through the Strait of Gibraltar, to the town of La Ciotat on the coast of Provence, fashioned as a logbook with chronological entries related to specific dates, table of contents. Illustrated throughout with approximately 100 beautiful engravings in brilliant colors from various points along the trip, including two full-page plates depicting the ship under sail, both signed by Schmied. Large 4to. Full leather with raised spine, gilt and polychrome wave decoration to front and rear covers, gilt tooling to inside covers with laid blue silk "endpapers", fitted slipcase. Spine slightly shaken, first signature loose in places. N.p. (Lyon) (Société des XXX de Lyon) 1931. From a limited edition of 135 copies, signed by Schmied in several places. Schmied was an important Art Deco painter, illustrator, and bookbinder particularly known for his beautiful limited edition books. He first gained notoriety with his commission to engrave and print the illustrations of Paul Jouve for Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book in 1919. He went on to create several additional pioneering works of books design throughout the 1920s and 1930s, including Les Climats and Le Cantique des Cantiques. His volumes were always expensive to produce and printed in very limited editions, usually no more than 200 copies. He sold his books by bringing sheets of works in progress to Parisian art fairs, with the hopes of getting wealthy art and book collectors to buy a subscription. Once the Great Depression took hold, the economic climate could no longer support the cost of Schmied's books, and he was forced to close his workshop. A gorgeous feat of Art Deco book design; as of March 2016, WorldCat locates five holdings in North America.

318 x 241 mm. (12 1/2 x 9 1/2"). 8 p.l. (first four blank), 145 pp., [9] leaves (last four blank). Unbound as issued in original printed paper wrappers. With 14 full-page color wood engravings (including the frontispiece signed in pencil by Schmied) and 635 color panel borders, line fillers, and tailpieces in the Art Deco style, all by Schmied. Recto of limitations page with a facsimile inscription by the author to Schmied. Carteret IV, 263. â Short ink mark to margin of title page, just the faintest isolated smudge or freckled foxing, otherwise a very fine copy, clean and fresh, with the fragile wrapper unsoiled and remarkably well preserved. This is an excellent example of the impressive book arts productions of François-Louis Schmied (1873-1941), a man who raised Art Deco to its highest level in the field of bibliophilic publishing in France and someone who generally was responsible (as here) for every aspect of the production of his books. He engraved all of the woodcut decorations and plates for "Histoire," and printed them himself as well as designed the layout of the text, which was printed with the assistance of his son Théo and P. Guillemat. The text here is a love story set in the Middle East, the work of Dr. Joseph-Charles Mardrus (1868-1949), who described himself as "Muslim by birth and Parisian by accident." Born in Egypt and educated in Lebanon, the physician and eminent Orientalist was a fixture in the intellectual circles of Paris, where he helped to inspire the rage for all things Oriental. He produced a well-received, unexpurgated translation of "One Thousand and One Nights," and was commissioned by the French government to produce a translation of the Koran. He gives full credit to Schmied for the realization of the present work in his inscription, which reads: "Dear Schmied, it is to please you that this unpublished text has been developed. Without you, without your enthusiasm, it would still be in nothingness. Your friend, J. C. M.". FIRST EDITION. No. 50 OF 170 COPIES, SIGNED BY SCHMIED.

Livre D'Artiste - Francois Louis Schmied's The Twelve Caesars SCHMIED, Francois-Louis, illustrator. Les Douze Césars. Traduction inédite de Joseph Estève. Préface de Louis Barthou de L'Académie Francaise. Paris: F.-L. Schmied, 1928. Limited to 175 copies printed on vélin d'Arches (this being no. 165) signed by F.L. Schmied. Large octavo (11 1/4 x 7 3/8 inches; 286 x 188 mm.). [viii], 1-[10], I-CCCXXVI, [viii] pp. Decorative title and section titles printed in gold, and twenty-three color illustrations by Schmied, comprised of nine vignette tailpieces, and fourteen full-page plates, including the twelve portraits. Small stain (5/16 x 5/16 inch) on lower margin of preface and first dedication leaf. Original printed wrappers and spine bound in, some light foxing to wrappers only. Near fine. Bound ca. 1928 by Phillipe Gonin (stamp-signed in gilt on front doublure) in full dark blue crushed levant morocco, smooth spine lettered in gilt, medium blue calf doublures, dark blue watered silk endleaves, top edge trimmed, others uncut. Joints expertly and almost invisibly repaired. A wonderful example of the highly appealing Schmied livre d'artiste version of Suetonius' classic biographies of the First Twelve Roman Emperors, originally written in 121 A.D. The Plates: Julius Caesar; Augustus; Tiberius; Caligula; Claudius; Nero; Galba; Otho; Vitellius; Vespasian; Titus & Domitian "In addition to engraved portraits of the Caesars, Schmied decorated the book with some elaborate designs in rules, printed in gold. One hundred and seventy-five copies were printed of which the first thirty copies contained suites of the illustrations in black and in color." (Ward Ritchie. Art Deco. The Books of Francois-Louis Schmied, p.32). Francois-Louis Schmied (1873-1941) was one of the most important, original, and active figures in the world of artists' books. He was born and studied in Geneva, moved to Paris at age 22 to make a living as a wood engraver, and joined the French Foreign Legion in his mid-40s, losing an eye in the Great War. It was after 1919 that Schmied began to focus primarily on the production of "editions de luxe," and in the mid-1920s, he and his eldest son Theo managed an atelier that issued a distinguished series of sumptuous works in very small editions, largely for members of elite French bibliophile societies. The Roman biographer Suetonius (69-after 122 AD) served for some years as a secretary to Hadrian, but he was dismissed for an indiscretion involving the emperor's wife, after which he retired from public life in order to devote himself to literature. He wrote a considerable number of biographies as well as works on antiquities, natural science, and even linguistics, but all that have survived are his "Lives of Famous Men" (in part) and the present "Lives of the Twelve Caesars." Our work contains biographies of the Roman rulers from Julius Caesar through Domitian, with formulaic descriptions of family history, public career, physical appearance, private life, and vices and virtues. The work is of great interest to us mainly because of its material relating to the emperors' often scandalous private lives, material to which Suetonius had access in the imperial archives, and material that would otherwise have been lost. De vita Caesarum, commonly known as The Twelve Caesars, is a set of twelve biographies of Julius Caesar and the first eleven emperors of the Roman Empire written by Gaius Suetonius Tranquillus. The work, written in AD 121 during the reign of the emperor Hadrian, was the most popular work of Suetonius, at that time Hadrian's personal secretary, and is the largest among his surviving writings. It was dedicated to a friend, the Praetorian prefect Gaius Septicius Clarus. The Twelve Caesars was considered very significant in antiquity and remains a primary source on Roman history. The book discusses the significant and critical period of the Principate from the end of the Republic to the reign of Domitian; comparisons are often made with Tacitus, whose surviving works document a similar period. Gaius Suetonius Tranquillus, commonly known as Suetonius (c. 69 - after 122 AD), was a Roman historian who wrote during the early Imperial era of the Roman Empire. His most important surviving work is a set of biographies of twelve successive Roman rulers, from Julius Caesar to Domitian, entitled De Vita Caesarum. Other works by Suetonius concern the daily life of Rome, politics, oratory, and the lives of famous writers, including poets, historians, and grammarians. A few of these books have partially survived, but many have been lost. Ritchie, 26.
