Hello & Happy New Year!
Quick hello to anyone who downloaded source code from any of my recent videos via Gumroad hope it helped and if you have any questions just reply to this email!
As I mentioned in the title there are soon to be a number of changes coming to Chrome Extensions in the form of the update from v2 of the Chrome manifest to v3. The first thing I want to say here is don’t worry, v2 can likely still be used on the Chrome Web Store for around a year after version three is launched. - So no need to update right away!
When will this update arrive? – Originally the Chrome team had planned this update in late 2019, then 2020 and now it is planned for mid-January 2021 (so in a few days to a week). At the moment they have not released any updated sample extension code, so I can’t really jump into the changes just yet, but the main updates will be around background pages and moving to a service worker driven flow.
I will be covering all of these changes on my YouTube channel and write some more detailed posts here on my newsletter. If you have any questions on how this could effect your extensions just drop me a message by replying to this email or leave a comment on my most recent YouTube video & I’ll do my best to look into it for you.
Talking of YouTube, I’ll share my two most recent videos below, firstly how to call an API from your extensions (with some thoughts towards the end of the video about manifest version 3)
Next is a longer video, in which I set-out to develop 4 extensions in one video from start to finish. – This has been my best performing video so far on the channel so perhaps I will need to create more like this?
Finally big thanks to anyone who has subscribed, recently passed the 200 subscriber mark which hopefully is a sign that people are enjoying the content!
Best,
Rusty
