- 4. What musical instruments did they play? Ringo Starr played the drums John Lennon played the rythm guitar. Paul McCartney played the bass. George Harrison played the rythm guitar. They all could play a variety of different instruments (piano, harmonica, percussion,…). They all sang. Lennon used to write the lyrics and McCartney wrote the music.

Finally, “The Beatles”. Beatle is not an English word. It’s a mix of the words “Beat” (rythm) and “Beetle” (insect). John Lennon had a dream about this name. Richard Starky called himself Ringo Starr because he used to wear lots of rings.
