James Marsters is no stranger to playing the big bad and his newest character on Marvel’s “Runaways” is no exception.
“I don’t know if the creators would agree with me, but in my eyes, I’m the biggest douchebag of all the villains,” the 55-year-old actor recently told Page Six. “They’re mild and then I’m just horrible and it’s really fun.”
“Runaways” follows a group of teenagers who find out their parents are super-villains, and, of course, Marsters, who rose to fame playing baddie Spike in “Buffy The Vampire Slayer,” plays one of the fathers.
“I haven’t had this much fun since ‘Buffy’ and I’ve had a lot of fun,” he said. “I’ve gotten a lot of roles that were really delicious, but this is just out of the park.”
Marsters isn’t worried about being typecast, either, because he’d rather play the bad guy anyway.
“I love doing villains,” he told us. “I try to be a nice person, which really comes down to not sharing most of what I’m thinking. Trying to be nice is editing yourself all the time and when you get to play a villain, you kind of get to barf all that out. I would much rather do villains than heroes. Heroes have to hump the whole plot. They have to show up to work like five times more often, have longer hours and they’re always worried and sweating and trying to save someone.”
He added, “When you’re a villain you really just get to judge people and lurk and then jump out of shadows and whack them upside the head.”
“Runaways” premieres on Tuesday on Hulu.
