UFC 193 results: Danny Martinez outworks Richie Vaculik to take unanimous decision

MELBOURNE, Australia – Danny Martinez and Richie Vaculik battled it out on the feet for three rounds, but it was the wrestling of Martinez that gave him the edge and earned him the unanimous decision.

The flyweight bout was part of the preliminary card of today’s UFC 193 event at Etihad Stadium in Melbourne, Australia. It aired on FOX Sports 1 following additional prelims on UFC Fight Pass and ahead of a main card on pay-per-view.

The two 125 pounders came out throwing heavy shots that landed infrequently and with little by way of visible effect. Martinez (17-7 MMA, 1-3 UFC) changed things up quickly, executing a quick takedown and beginning to go to work in the full guard of Vaculik (10-4 MMA, 1-3 UFC). With the referee threatening a stand-up, Martinez postured up and landed a solid elbow but still found himself reversed and on the bottom moments later.

Martinez executed a reversal of his own moments later and ended Round 1 controlling Vaculik with a front headlock.

Round 2 opened with a flurry again, and the two men spent the majority of the round on the feet. Martinez was landing heavy shots that began to back up Vaculik. Martinez scored with another takedown, a trend that repeated once again in Round 3 as Martinez was quick to put Vaculik on his back.

A fatigued Martinez was able to hold on through the round, in the end earning a unanimous decision by scores of 30-27 across the board.

Prior to the bout, Vaculik had alternated wins and losses since entering the UFC, most recently suffering a knockout loss to Louis Smolka at UFC Fight Night 55.

Martinez entered the fight on a three-fight losing streak, all three defeats having taken place in the UFC octagon.
