We stayed in town for five nights. We did stay on top near the Miradouro de Fontainhas. We walked down once to the river, but with our Bulldog and pet stroller it was pretty rough to walk up/down the steep streets. So we were happy to find this Funicular not far from our holiday rental.
One way is 4 Euros, a two-way ticket is 6 Euros. Our pet stroller did fit perfectly. Our Bulldog was very welcome on the Funicular (one of the staff even was also a Bulldog-owner). Dogs ride for free even.
On weekends the Funicalar is in service until late night even. It's steep and quick ride. And offers some nice views on the way. Even on weekends we only needed to wait a few minutes. Mostly no wait even.
A very convenient way to travel to the top or bottom of lovely Porto. Prices are fair and the staff very friendly and helpful.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - 5716423487Oct 31, 2023
Well, this was to be our way back after a day on the River.
But not to be. The cashier only wanted cash, 4 eu pp. no change available. No change machine, no credit card.
So out to the stairs like everyone else.
I didn't count, but would guess the steps were in the 300 range.
After thought. I could have bought two round trips at 16 eu and let the money left just be a tip.
Maybe next time I'll. Think a little faster.
It was a long way up....1000 year old staircase with rails for half the way.
Update: add a star
Went back same way from dinner. Still didn't have the exact 8!eu and just gave her a ten spot.
Very crowded ride. But the top is 5 minutes to our stay. Nice.Helpful 5Thanks 3Love this 5Oh no 2 - Oct 25, 2018
One thing I learned during my long weekend is that every hill you walk down in Porto is another one that you're just going to have to climb back up. And walking down from the Sé to the Douro river side, I knew that I would have to climb back up this dang hill.
But NO! Here's the funicular which for the low, low price of €2.50 each way and a short wait, I got to let technology raise me up.
It's simple enough. Buy your ticket from the man behind the glass. And then hand your ticket to the man at the turnstile (probably the same man). Climb aboard. And you're done.
The ride is quick, smooth and fun. Great view of the Ponte Dom LuÃs I if you're at the proper end of the car.
