Kiyomizu-dera is one of Kyoto’s most popular temples, but with most of it already free for the public, is it worth entering the paid section?
When so much of Kyoto’s iconic Kiyomizu-dera temple can already be enjoyed for free, many visitors question whether there is anything more to see past the ticket gates for 400 yen (2.80 USD). As someone who has been to Kiyomizu-dera’s paid section twice, I thought I’d give an honest opinion
Better Temple Views
Perhaps the greatest perk of Kiyomizu-dera’s paid section is the grand view you get of the temple itself. While I do think the view of Kyoto city is better seen from the free section, something about the temple with the city and mountain backdrop is an iconic view that can only be enjoyed past the ticket gate.
Unique Photo Opportunities
Building on the previous point, there are certainly more unique photo opportunities once you’ve gone past the ticket gates at Kiyomizu-dera.
The backdrop of Kyoto city with the temple as the focal point is an amazing way to showcase the harmonious contrast between modern and ancient Japan.
Furthermore, there are plenty of cool artifacts like Buddha statues and torii gates to appreciate in this section too.
Greater Architectural Appreciation
Amazing views aside, heading to the paid area of Kiyomizu-dera allows you to appreciate the temple’s architecture and historical significance more intently. For instance, this unique view here allows you to see a more vintage side of the structure, keeping in mind that it was built without using a single nail!
Scenic Walking Trails
Last but certainly not least are the many walking trails around Kiyomizu-dera temple that are only accessible when you’ve passed the ticket office.
In a way, you get to feel like you’ve gone on a mini-hike as the trails go through some of Kyoto’s natural thick green bushes.
Again, you get various unique angles of the temple too, which in and of itself can make your time at this exclusive section more worthwhile.
Verdict: Worth It!
For a measly 400 yen, having access to all these extras lets you soak in the whole Kiyomizu-dera vibe. Without a doubt, it’s worth paying for the experience at least once, as you will get unique views of the temple while embracing much of Kyoto’s natural beauty too!
That being said, there’s no need to go through the ticket gates every time you visit, as I believe the real highlight of Kiyomizu-dera is the views of Kyoto city you get just before the paid section. I also highly recommend spending ample time exploring the shops at Ninenzaka and Sannenzaka!
