The prickly pear, Opuntia engelmannii, is widespread in southern and southwestern states as well as northern Mexico. In the US, it is known as desert prickly pear, discus prickly pear, and Engelmann's prickly pear, while in Mexico, it is known as joconostle, and vela de coyote.
From Sonora (state) and Chihuahua (state) to the Tamaulipan Matorral in north and central Tamaulipas, the Opuntia engelmannii range can be found in the United States.
Opuntia engelmannii is a shrubby species with dense clumps that can grow up to 3.5 meters (11 feet) tall and usually have no discernible trunks. The pads are obovate to spherical, green (occasionally blue-green), 15–30 cm long, and 12–20 cm wide.
Fruits with purple flesh measure 3–7 cm.

The ovate-shaped pads may be anywhere between 6" and 12" wide. It requires very little water as it is drought-tolerant and can thrive in direct sunlight.
It produces beautiful flower clusters in the late spring that range in hue from yellow to peach. The purple fruit that grows from those blooms is important and can be eaten fresh or used to make jams, jellies, syrups, beverages, and a variety of other delectable food combinations!
If you reside in a climate with moderate temperatures (sustained lows of 15 degrees Fahrenheit would not be ideal), you might consider include this plant in your garden because of its versatility.
