It seems that backlight bleed is still present with the studio displays. Arstechnica reviewed two panels, one of which had backlight bleed. That's a 50/50 chance. I'm a little bit worried that with my luck I'll receive a dud right off the bat. Ugh!

That is a shame. I was hoping that at that price point Apple would make sure the quality of each panel is top notch. Let's hope the one with the backlight bleed is a dud and most people get a panel like the one below it.

While I haven't been superbly impressed by Apple's tolerances as far as IPS displays go, one thing I've always enjoyed so far is how receptive they've been been to me asking for an exchange or refund for these reasons.
But yeah that's going to be a bit of a lottery.

no way to avoid backlight bleed on LCD. none of apple’s products escaped it.

In terms of backlight bleed, you'll have less chances getting a dud from companies ready to put aside unsatisfactory samples and which reputation partly comes from that commitment (and they'll charge you for it), such as most of Eizo's ColorEdge's range - but I've occasionally seen duds from them as well.

Even at this price point I am not expecting Apple to commit to such level of excellence (unfortunately).

An alternative possibility is to buy several samples of a cheaper display, do the QA yourself and return the less satisfying ones. Since for comparable specs they often use the same panels, including the backlight, if you're lucky you can end up with a pretty nifty sample.

I'm not going to check any for mine. But the display looks way better than my M1 iMac, which has a lot of vignette in the corners.

It’s an edge-lit LED.

Here
It is unfortunate, but is a side effect of this display technology. I will say that I don’t open a black image in a dark room at max brightness so I hope that if I have any (haven’t opened it yet) it isn’t something I notice in my normal use.

Mine has a bit of backlight bleed on the bottom right and top right... Thinking of exchanging it.

I know it's a lottery, anyone have units with no backlight bleeding at all?

i have two and none of them has major backlight bleed. major defined as you can see white light coming out. But I think I do exhibit screen uniformity issues as the bottom lights appear stronger than the top.

That is not bad backlight bleed

If you want to see bad, pop on over to /r/monitors

There are some truly abysmal backlight bleed situations shown there
Lol

I did a test myself, turning off all lights, displaying a black image, and cranked the brightness a bit higher. Backlight bleed is not obvious in my panel. Maybe I am lucky?

This is what I have from my new imac 2021. Is this normal? I just cannot watch any movie without noticing it.

I can see some very minor vignetting in the corners with a black screen, cranked to full brightness, in a dark room.

Not perfect, but better than most IPS displays that I've owned. I just received mine about a week ago, so I assume it's relatively recently manufactured. Way better than that 2021 iMac, that would annoy the heck out of me. 😅
